Ah the waffle, one of my favorite breakfast foods. Recently found out that the word origin of waffle is related to wafer. In fact, a waffle is essentially a leavened wafer. Around the 17th century, leaven added to wafers became popular and they met their perfect companion, maple syrup! Yes, the grid-like pattern is perfect for holding that delicious, golden liquid. When I was a kid, my dad would always call syrup by the playful name, "syr-love-it." Actually, he still calls it sometimes! :)
