The Multicolor Candle Project by cjphoto

The Multicolor Candle Project

Apparently, my neighbors have noticed me taking photos outside. One approached me to ask if she could pay me to take product photos of the candles that she makes. Her goal was simple shots of the front and back on an off-white background, with good detail and accurate colors.

I've shot white-on-white many times throughout my past 365 Projects, so this was right up my alley. Bought this color checker which includes software designed to help the colors stay accurate. In addition to the simple shots, I played around with adding a flame in post and ribbons in the background for some creative flare.

My neighbor loved the images and asked me to take more of the next candles she makes! This was such an enjoyable project and learned so much. I'm going to work hard to improve my product photography even more! Hope to post more practice shots here eventually. 😄

Has someone ever asked you to take photos for them (of an item or a living thing, haha)?
good to see you back!

Big thumbs up, Chris! I think you were wanting to go in that direction, if I remember correctly. Lovely candles presented very well.

@mcsiegle - So nice, thank you!! Yes, improving and getting clients through product photography is my goal.

@grammyn @30pics4jackiesdiamond - Thank you!! Yes, very busy but doing well too! Planning some new goals and photo projects so now I just gotta start on them, which is the hardest part, but I'll get there! :)

@kjarn - Thank you Kathy! It took more time than I care to admit to position those ribbons in an appealing way.

Glad to see you popping in. Love how you caught the colors in the candles with the frame and the ribbon and gave us a hint at your photo setup.

Hi Chris! Nice looking shots of the candles. Keep up the good work. Stay well.

She asked the right person! Yes, a friend asked me to come and take a family portrait for her a few years back. It was going to be the first time the whole family-brothers, sisters, grandchildren, et al were together in several years. I am not a portrait photographer whatsoever so I was really nervous! You did a much better job on her candles than I did on the portrait I think!

@olivetreeann - Thanks very much Ann! Wow, I would be so nervous too but what a wonderful memory to make for your friend. How did you get everyone to organize for the photo?
May 5th, 2022
@cjphoto I organized them by family and sat Grandma in front and center. Most of the children filled in the front row, and the adults staggered themselves by height. Then it was just a matter of making sure everyone's hands were in a good spot and that they were smiling. They also wanted to do one with everybody wearing a crazy hat- that one turned out really cute.

@olivetreeann Awesome organizing skills and the crazy hats sounds like so much fun. Adding in a little silliness is always a great way to make everyone feel a bit more relaxed, including the photographer!
