Snake!!! by cjwhite

Snake!!!

I was ready to call it a day and return to the house. I had shots of a wasp, a cool caterpillar, and a blue bee. I decided I would make one more round of the yellow wildflowers, because that's where I was finding cool stuff today.

I stopped dead in my tracks! There was a SNAKE in my wildflowers! I know it's silly, but I fear snakes more than any living creature. I knew it was a harmless Northern Rough Green Snake, but to me a snake is a snake.

I thought I have to get a pic. This is too good not to. I was shaking so hard by then, it's a miracle the pics weren't just a blur. If I didn't have zoom on my camera, I wouldn't have gotten any at all. I took pics until he started slithering away and then I did call it a day!!! :0)

The Northern Rough Green Snake is found in the US, southern Canada, and northern Mexico. They rarely exceed 90 cm (around 36 inches). I think this one was at its limit! They eat crickets, spiders, moths, butterflies, and grasshoppers. He could find all these goodies in the wildflowers.
Amazing shot! And even though you're scared of them - he looks beautiful :)

You have done extremely well if you have a fear of snakes. Ya gotta love zoom. He certainly blends in with his surroundings. I spotted 4 snakes here the other day but they were all very camera shy and disappeared before I even had a chance to get the camera.

Nice composure...I mean you for catching the shot and not trembling like a leaf! Awesome capture too : )

Okay Carolyn, this is another great shot with more vibrant green & yellow! I think I should start using the zoom more often.

Fantastic - that yellow and green is so zingy. I adore snakes! I'd love to seem them more often but we only have two fairly shy native species - I've seen an adder in the wild only once - and I was so excited I chased after it to get a pic, down the edge of a slightly precipitous clifftop - my walking friends had to hold on to me to stop me losing my footing ...
April 10th, 2011
Eek! His colouring makes him look not even real! It looks like he's been spray painted or something. Good on you for facing your fear for art's sake!
April 11th, 2011
