I love shooting new birds! This is my first Purple Finch. As you can tell, it's not purple. His Latin name is carpodacus purpurcus. Purpurcus means crimson or other reddish color. My bird book uses the color word raspberry.
Purple Finches visit Tennessee from October to April.
I only saw this one male. If the female was with him, she was hidden amongst the branches.
Great capture. Such a pretty and colorful little bird. The females are usually more dull. I use an online guide (allaboutbirds.org). It's a great site and it's free. This is a fav for me.
