That's not a stick!!! by cjwhite

That's not a stick!!!

This is not the subject I was looking for today! If you've been following me for awhile, you know that snakes are not my friends. I've gotten better, since starting the 365. I didn't hesitate to snap pics of this Garter Snake. I've never seen one sticking up out of the grass like this before. It was small, I think. I never could see all of it.

I bragged to my Mom that my heart rate stayed normal, while I was taking the snake pics. Bragging is not a good thing. Thirty minutes later, a Black Racer came slithering out of a thicket near my feet and I screamed and ran like the wind!!! LOL! I was done for the day! One step forward and one step back.

Thank you for your comments and faves on yesterday's pics!!! :0)
He had to go up periscope for a good look around. Great capture, I'm sure you can overcome your fear with a little effort. Your hand was steady for this shot.

He's too cool!!! Great find!

Up periscope! Great shot.
April 16th, 2012
Great shot! Good story too! lol
April 16th, 2012
LOL! Great story. I was just out in the backyard, if I'd seen this, I might not have gone!
April 16th, 2012
Oh My!!! I would have done something far worse than just run! That would have scared the bejesus out of me!!
April 16th, 2012
Excellent shot. I LOL at your screaming after the fact. I love snakes. I have been very close to some really neat looking snakes and some ones that I'd just as soon not be that close. First encounter with a rattlesnake, it was HOLY CRAP only I used the S word instead. Last encounter, I actually wanted it to come out so I could get a good photo of it. It didn't and I didn't push my luck either. Proud of you for taking a shot of something that you don't enjoy. Just keep in mind, they are way more afraid of you than you are of them.

yikes
April 16th, 2012
Well done, Carolyn, fabulous shot. And I note, after Googling, that they are non-venomous so nothing to fear from this one. Still, it's best to practise on the non-poisonous ones I guess. Not many in that category here, I'm afraid, so I just take my chances when stomping through long grass.
April 16th, 2012
Great capture… he looks just like a blade of grass.
April 16th, 2012
OMG Carolyn!! i know you must have been freaking Out!! GREAT Capture and Color's!! FAVE FOR BRAVERY!! LOL...really good shot!
April 16th, 2012
I don't scare easily ... have gone mighty close to pit-bulls who are angry. But, I think that this would freak me out. Beautiful capture tho and bravo for your bravery!!
April 16th, 2012
He was as curious as you were. Strange actions onhis part
April 16th, 2012
Great capture and funny story!
April 16th, 2012
Great story. I'd have been screaming too.
April 16th, 2012
Wonderful capture of this snake. I would have ran too! Me and snakes....no thanks:-)
April 16th, 2012
Wonderful
April 16th, 2012
Good for you - I wouldn't have stuck around for that, I can barely look at the picture! Good capture though.
April 16th, 2012
That is a great picture...I've never seen a garter snake do that.
April 16th, 2012
Cool shot! And you managed to keep the focus sharp too! I've never seen a snake do that either.
April 16th, 2012
looks to me like you are now charming the snakes.
April 16th, 2012
Holy crap! Vertical snakes!! This ain't what nature intended!
April 16th, 2012
@robv Love that comment! These guys are very friendly, but one sneaking up on you can even scare me. I had to remove one from my office one day. Just picked him up and moved him outside. He bit, but it didn't hurt. All was well, the screaming lady finally calmed down.
April 16th, 2012
so...you charm the cats, the birds, the butterflies, random insects, and snakes, too?! Great photo and the clarity proves your steady hand & nerves!!
April 16th, 2012
I think he's stalking you! I like pictures of snakes but I don't want to be walking through the grass and almost step on one!
April 16th, 2012
Very cool!
April 16th, 2012
Ha! What a surprise!!!
April 16th, 2012
Wow--that is amazing. GREAT JOB. I'd have been screaming, too.
April 16th, 2012
Fabulous shot! :D
April 16th, 2012
So you don't like snakes. And I was looking forward to see all the snakes living around you. Great photo.
April 16th, 2012
Two snakes in one day! That's enough to scare the bejeebers out of you.
April 16th, 2012
@bardejov Thanks! I will try to get pics. We have a pretty green snake that lives here. They hang out in trees and bushes. I've been afraid of snakes my whole life. I know it's silly, but I can't help it.
April 16th, 2012
@memejanetx3 The only good thing about it is they were at my Mom's and not here! LOL!
April 16th, 2012
Great capture. Nice focus on it's eye! I hope you don't have any more of them making you scream lol.
April 16th, 2012
Yikes! You are brave to photograph it! Great slithery capture of this camouflaged critter!
April 16th, 2012
10 out of 10 for bravery. Well done this is a brilliant shot but I can just about hear the scream from your second encounter.
April 16th, 2012
wow, you're a lucky one! great....
April 16th, 2012
Great catch Carolyn, and perspective ,in amongst the grass
April 16th, 2012
What a great catch Carolyn
April 16th, 2012
What a cool catch!
April 16th, 2012
Fantastic find! Great shot
April 16th, 2012
Wow, what a cool catch! He does look like a stick unless the pic is magnified.
April 16th, 2012
Wow! I've never seen a garter snake standing up like this either - a cobra wanna-be?? Great capture!
April 16th, 2012
Amazing shot! He was obviously posing just for you :)
April 16th, 2012
Amazing capture Carolyn!
April 16th, 2012
Fabulous Capture! You patience was perfect with this shot! FAV
April 16th, 2012
Awww he's cute. I wonder if he thinks he's all camoflaged there:)
April 16th, 2012
you made me laugh, I am sometimes startled by snakes but not scared. I took a picture of my daughter when she was young with a garter snake wrapped around her 2 wrists like handcuffs but I've never seen them standing up like this - great find!!
April 16th, 2012
I think you're very brave to photograph the first snake! Just looking at your pic makes me shiver. We hardly ever see a snake in the UK but my daughter's dog died from an adder bite and I am terrified of them!
April 16th, 2012
Wow, You must love the snakes , they pose for you and you can capture those amazing pic.
April 16th, 2012
oh wow...i admire you for taking the shot...i probably wouldn't. I have capture snakes but behind glass.
April 16th, 2012
wow, fabulous capture
April 16th, 2012
Amazing capture and you are braver than me .... there are many poisonous snakes here in Asia and I wouldn't go walking about in long grass here!
April 17th, 2012
Fantastic capture! Good story. Black racers get to me too. When I was a child, I was the designated person to get the black racers out of the chicken yard before they killed the chickens by scaring them to death (chickens run too when they see black racers).
April 17th, 2012
ha you are braver than me! yikes
April 17th, 2012
Perfect! I love snakes - but we don't get many venomous varieties (or any at all!) our way ...
