Saving the wildflowers by cjwhite

Saving the wildflowers

The sound of a farm tractor woke me up early this morning. I thought it sounded close, so I stumbled out of bed and looked outside. It was my neighbor cutting my hay. We have a deal about the hay. He cuts and bales it for his animals and I get a clean field. No money changes hands. The only glitch in this deal is I never know when he's going to show up. The first thing that went through my mind was my wildflowers and butterflies. I dressed and flew out the door. There was a new person doing the actual hay cutting. I introduced myself and explained that I had one area that needed to stay uncut. People always look at me a little strangely, when I try to explain why I want to keep my weeds. It bothered me the first few times. I'm fairly sure some people think I'm nuts. They see me wandering around in the grass and weeds with my camera everyday. I know I'm not crazy...well, maybe a little. I just love to take pics of butterflies and insects. It keeps me sane. I wouldn't have gotten this shot, if I hadn't gone outside to save my wildflowers. :0)

Thank you so much for visiting my project!!! I have a spider pic for my other album. I know some people don't like spiders. I don't want them on me, but I like to look at them through the lens. :0)
Awesome Shot.

Great capture and a wonderful idea to maintain the butterfly sanctuary 8-)

Spectacular Catch! Yes, I know where you are with the tall grass - my spot of lawn never gets mowed. Even when my neighbor offers to mow because my mower is broke. I plant lots of perennials there as well. Good for you to save some natural area for the smaller things in life - bugs and blooms!

Loved your story! And I could definitely relate even without having a field of my own (which I'd sure love!!) Your butterfly pictures are the most fantastic, Carolyn - no way can anyone disturb their habitat for your shots! This Monarch is in such good shape for this time of year - a 2nd generation?? We're getting awfully dry again and the wildflowers are about gone.

Great save.

Beautiful! Well saved :)

I enjoyed reading your story! Yes, you need to save your wildflowers and butterflies! I sometimes wonder, when I get spotted in one of my ridiculous postures at a bush (trying to shove my camera into the branches to focus on a tiny jumping spider), if people think I'm old and nutty, haha. Awesome shot, Carolyn! 8)

Oh my goodness; good job you got out in time, would hate to lose your butterfly shots, I see hardly any; having said that one landed on Annabelle's head on Saturday for a split second, such a shame I couldn't have caught that!

Gorgeous capture. Thank God you woke up on time. We would have missed this and many other butterflies and insects.

You are a woman after my own heart. I came home for lunch yesterday so I could enjoy the last of the monarchs on my butterfly bushes. Great close up shot there.
September 13th, 2012
Beautiful capture. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of you; in fact they are usually too busy worrying about their own lives to give you much thought.
September 13th, 2012
Glad you stopped the mowing! Otherwise we'd miss out on fab shots like this one! I can just imagine what that guy must have been muttering to himself as he drove away. ;-)

@pyrrhula Mine is Veronia altiissma, too! I think it is so cool that you have the same wildflower that I'm seeing everyday right now!!! :0)

Fantasitic Carolyn, and save those wild flowers, you go girl
September 14th, 2012
Great shot! Do your monarchs stay year round?
September 18th, 2012
@lynnb Thank you! No, they don't stay all year. I wish they did! :0)
September 18th, 2012
@cjwhite Those Vernonia altissima bush / flowers can only grow here in a greenhouse. The butterflies to.
