This shot is SOOC outside of a crop. I shot it with the white balance set at "Shade" to give me a warmer sky. I will say that the sky was far from stunning tonight, but I didn't know if I should have used photoshop to add more reds. What do you think?
Also not crazy about the brush that's in front of the sun because I shot at f/5.6, rendering it out of focus. Am I being too picky?
I don't really like the brush either. I think either it needs more brush or none at all. The rest is great though!
Would it have been possible to get more of her legs? Could she have walked up that hill more? Maybe make her a little smaller?
Caryn, it is a very nice photo as is. Sometimes, silhouettes are the best artistic choice. I would like to see how this would turn out if you used some off camera fill flash to light the subject will still exposing the sunset like you did. If you have a speedlight and either a remote trigger or an ETTL cord, and a diffuser of any kind, clamp the light to something at about a 45 degree angle to the camera, two feet above her head and about 6 feet away. Then make adjustments as needed. If you don't have those things, put them on your wish list. :-)
I love the colours and silhouette I can't decide about the brush, it does look a bit lacking or minor and maybe it being more in focus would help that? but I think overall it is a great photo just as it is
i have no training whatsoever to be able to give any critique but I can say it's an outstanding shot. The silhouette is very sharp so congrats on catching that detail
I love the colours of the sky and I do love the silhouette too, the only critique I would give is the silhouette is maybe slightly too big and I like the OOF bushes in the background.
I think its beautiful i love a silhouette shot, and the tones of the sky are lovely and warm.....if i HAD to pick one thing i would have loved to see her full silhouette so she wasn't cut off at the knee's - but thats just being picky really and im a million miles away from knowing what im talking about anyway! - FAV! :)
@hamptanner Funny you mention the speed light...I'm picking one up today! I have a small one now, but picking up "the big dog" today. Comes with a remote, so I'll be in business. Can't wait to learn to use it.
@cmc1200 The speedlight will open up all kinds of new possibilities for you but they are also frustrating at times until you learn how to use them. The more you use it, the quicker you can master the learning curve. Have fun.
Beautifully done silhouette. I don't think you should have added any colors...I like it natural looking as is (beautiful gold tones!). Great composition as well.
I really like this. Honestly, I mistook the brush for distant trees, and I like it there in terms of this odd towering perspective. I also love the way the light creeps into the leg, highlighting the knee, like it's a silhouette that refuses to be totally 2D. Very impressive SOOC!
Great composition! Someone else already mentioned the cut off legs. Along the same lines, the angle makes the head seem larger. Moving the camera up would probably let you get a full sillouette and reduce the body distortion.
