Here is an adult male Summer Tanager, one of the many beautiful birds migrating to Texas for breeding season. I took this photo at Paradise Pond in Port Aransas, TX.
The little ant walking on that branch toward the bird doesn't know how lucky it is it didn't get eaten!
According to AllAboutBirds.com:
"The only entirely red bird in North America, the Summer Tanager is a bird of southern forests. It specializes in eating bees and wasps, both in the summer and on its wintering grounds in Central and South America." http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Summer_Tanager/id
@lyno Thanks so much! Didn't move here, though - I was born and raised in South Texas, within 90 miles of where most of my shots have been taken. We are blessed to be on the migration path of many, many birds!
@coastandcactus such wonderful photography! we lived in Baton Rouge for years and did a lot of Texas travel - but that was long before the camera bug bit. Your shots are amazing - we looked long into the night through them last night! Thanks for sharing all this beauty with us.
