Here we have a Barred Owl, or to honor William Shakespeare, a "Bard" Owl. This wonderful fellow lives on the ranch of a friend, and it doesn't take many calls before he appears out of nowhere - to our great delight - for observation and photographs.
Here is more about this wonderful owl: "A notable feature is its vocal repertoire. In addition to its distinctive 8-note hooting call (often rendered as “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all”), this owl projects a loud series of spectacular dueting vocalizations during courtship that sound like maniacal laughter."
I am grateful for each view and comment - thank you all!
Awesome! We have a wild pair that have been ever inching closer to our Nature Center. They view our resident Barred Owl, Jersey, as a territorial threat. They'll gat to calling back and forth and Jersey will reply. As they get closer, they get to sounding like monkeys! We have to bring Jersey inside at that point and then go out with rocks in soda can that we shake to try and scare the wild ones back a bit. It's very exciting when all three get to monkey calling!
