This is seafood! And yes this is edible!
This is an endemic specie of the Mediterranean Sea. In French we call it "figue de mer" ( sea fig), or "violet" or "biju". The taste is very strong, it's full of iodin.
When it's not open it looks like a potatoes.
I really love to eat them, when I was young my father used to buy some every Saturday, so when I'm on holiday in the southe of France I cannot forget to buy some...even if my daughters and husband find them disgusting and horrible to see!
Oh, I bet they taste divine.....they look like oysters, frankly, so I am not sure what the issue is! I feel the same way about sea urchins....my cousins used to fish them out, cut them open, put some lemon on them, and hand them over to me to eat raw!! Never forgot the taste....I would have them in a heartbeat!
@panthora it doesn't taste like oyster at all, the main taste is really the iodine, some people have to take a buttered toast to be able to swallow it...;) or a bit of lemon/vinegar....but in my family we use to eat it raw....you have to come to taste !
