Ink by colie

Ink

My get pushed partner @rafaseno challenged me to get some shots of ink dancing. One of my attempts. This is so fun and I'm sure there will be more to come as I'm still figuring it out.

Set up: A few of you asked how to do this and I'm sure there are lots of other ways but heres what I did.

#1 Set up a soft box to be the background. (Still want to try a black background as well but if I do I'll update the lighting there)
#2 Filled up an 8x11 clear glass vase i have thats only about 2 inches wide w/ cold water (you could use a fish tank) If I had one without a fish in it i would have used it.
#3 Had 2 lights on each side of me directed at the vase about 3-4ft
#4 I put a fork in the middle of the vase to set focus and used a shutter release cord (not needed if your close enough) I was playing with different settings iso, shutter etc. as well as lenses but I think this shot was at 400iso,5.6,1/125,55mm. Note: I found as the ink starts to fill the tank you will need to mess with your settings or slow down your shutter as the ink made it darker. which is why I dropped the shutter release cord and actually started looking through the view finder. The first 10 seconds are my favorite but then other fun things start to happen.
#5 putting in the ink- I bought ink at the craft store 4.99$ and filled up little medicine syringes with the different colors.( you could use a dropper or probably just pour in little bits) I shot just tiny amounts of each color on top of each other and clicked away. Heres where it's fun to get creative. Shoot it in at different places different amounts etc. Get a helper to shoot it in for you if you want. Fun for everyone. I didn't have a helper for this shot but it was nice to have an extra hand later to be able to just focus on the camera.
#6 The not so fun part- rinse out the ink, dry glass and repeat every 60ish seconds. Hope this is helpful:) have fun!

Great shot! The swirls are mesmerizing!
May 11th, 2013
@gazbadger Thank you soooo much! I used a glass vase that was about 10.00$ A fish tank would have given me more room and time but having the smaller rectangular vase was actually fine and It was nice because I had to do so much rinsing and re filling each time I wanted to pour new ink in which for me was about every 60 seconds.
May 12th, 2013
@johnfalconer Thank you so much! You should, it's a fun one!
