What do I do wrong? by corinnec

What do I do wrong?

This is a relatively high ISO picture and my screen shows that I have the correct exposure (I find it too dark). The picture definition is so poor. Could I obtain a better definition with an ISO of 800? Is this poor definition due to my cropped sensor?
I'm unable to answer those questions but I still like the shot.

It has a moody feel as it is. I like it! Sorry. Can't help with your ISO, as I am certainly no expert. I'd say experiment with the same subject and see which ISO works best for you.

You can go higher with your iso, but you could get some noise. What’s the lowest F stop your lens has? You can gain light by dropping that. All depends how you want to focus the shot and what depth of field you wish to have. You can go for a slower shutter speed but your subject needs to be still or you will get movement. Play around with it and see what you end up with. I think your best option is post processing, you can get this lighter just with an edit.

Like it never the less .Maybe the focus more between the two hands ?

I don't know the answer but I think the exposure looks nice.

Did you try shooting in RAW file format? I had this camera before and the free camera raw software will do wonders

You could use some off camera lighting. I sometimes use my phone flashlight.

Nice shot

You’ve had lots of good advice already, so I’d def shoot in RAW, experiment by varying ISO (noise depends on camera and lens), aperture and shutter speed (depends whether you want to capture motion or not), use off-camera flash and then edit (in RAW first) to enhance and differentiate colours/tones. But hey, what do I know?!

I think it looks very nice and I like how it tells a story.

Nice expressive photo, I think the advice you have been given is good, just experiment.

@ricksnap thanks for taking the time and helping me in this situation. I’ll definitely try to shoot in raw format.
