I am always surprised when the surprise lilies come up and bloom. This lily goes by several names. I call it "surprise lily", because it surprises me. In the spring, the plants are lush with tall green leaves. The leaves die down. In August, the flower stalks shoot out of the ground. This year, the first flower stalks appeared in late July. The stalks often shoot up after a rain shower has moistened the hard, dry soil.
