A Dandy Hover by danacarruthers

A Dandy Hover

138 / 365
I have been toying with this image for a few days now. I simply could not make up my mind between the colour version and the B&W. After much deliberation, I decided that there was just too much yellow in the colour version. Also, I feel that you don't see enough B&W insect photography and I liked the way this hover fly stood out against the white of the dandelion.

This is absolutely brilliant Dana, and totally the right choice to go B&W. Well done and fave!

I agree with you about black and white. The hover fly isn't one of those showy insects whose colours or shapes are enough to make a photo (like a dragonfly or bumblebee), so with this you have nothing distracting you from the lines and detail of the insect and its perfect symmetry. It makes me look at it longer and I love the shine on the wings. I think if this was in colour I might have spent a few seconds looking at it, but in black and white it has made me write all this!!! Great shot!

So clear and beautifully composed! This is an awesome capture. The B&W treatment does put the focus on the insect very well! 8)

Dana this is amazing the fly is so sharp - i think colour would have detracted from this stunning macro

Stunning Dana.. I haven't seen the colour version so i'll not comment. But the B&W works well, some strong tone to hold it together.
