The Burghers of Calais by August Rodin by danette

The Burghers of Calais by August Rodin

I took this photo in 2013 in Philadelphia. In doing the black and white challenge, I chose to work on some old photos to see how I could improve them. I liked this way this came out. It almost seems like a pencil drawing. The light was harsh that day. Comments/feedback always welcomed.

In 1346, the English King Edward III laid siege to the French Port of Calais. Eleven months later, Edward demanded the surrender of six of the town's leading men, or burghers, in return for sparing its citizens. Rodin's sculpture commemorates this episode and emphasizes the internal struggle of each man as he walks toward his fate wearing a sackcloth and rope halter. The burghers were later spared thanks to the intervention of the English Queen who feared that their deaths would bring back luck to her unborn child.
Wow - my favorite scuptor!

@sophiaz Mine, too! I was fortunate to see his museum in Paris, so when we went to PA, I had to go to this museum. It is a must see!

I don't know what this particular sculpture is depicting, but it looks like someone having a very bad day. Works very well with the white background!

@skipt07 you can go back and read my description. It's interesting. Very moving in person.

@danette - Oh yes. I only read the part that shows on the home page. I thought maybe he got a new camera and couldn't figure out all the buttons, dials and settings!

@skipt07 or trying to learn WordPress to set up a new website. My son is helping me now. You'll get used to your camera. The sculpture, though, was large. Overpowering, really.

Beautiful capture, works really well in b&w for sure! It does remind me of a pencil drawing, cool!

@danette - It is overwhelming! It is amazing the detail in the expression of his face as well as in its arms. I took a course a number of years ago through Penn State for Webmaster. I thought my oldest daughter and I could do web design. I learned HTML and Java Script. She is very talented when it comes to layout. We did a few pages, but we never really advertised. It was mostly by word of mouth. But the people who wanted us to do pages wanted all kinds to things but didn't want to pay for it. It is amazing what "friends" seem to think their friends should do for them for nothing.

Brilliant! I suppose you can't go wrong with Rodin! I too found that hard light made for a stronger B&W...your rendition is exquisite! I love this!
