Florida Cracker Trail by danette

Florida Cracker Trail

Florida has a long history of cattle ranchers. During their very early years, they would drive cattle from various areas of the state to sell in Tampa. They would then return home to Ft. Pierce on the east side of the state. This ride is held annually in February to commemorate those years. They begin on the west coast and a week later arrive in Ft. Pierce. I finally was able to catch up with them as they crossed through the center part of the state. My own family raised cattle and this tugged at my heart strings. I wish I could ride along with them!
Great shot! You've got great vantage point of the action.

@louannwarren The south-central part of Florida still has many cattle ranches. There is a fabulous wildlife photographer, Carlton Ward (who is a descendent of a past Governor), working to ensure some of those ranches stay sustainable in order to help wildlife. If you like historical novels, my favorite book is, "A Land Remembered" by Patrick Smith. Gives the best overview of Florida's history in an easy to read format.
