Our second day in the Azores, we took a wonderful dolphin and whale tour. No whales, but dolphins, jumping tuna, and tons of sea birds. The water was so blue and clear, so if you didn't see the dolphins jumping, you could spot them as they weaved in an out in the water. There were many varieties of Dolphins we saw, and they were roaming free everywhere. The Azores are UNESCO Heritage protected, and many of the tours are designed to give access, but keep the distance so these wonderful creatures can be protected. In fact, later this day, we went to Europe's largest gin library where the owner has made a Gin (Baleia) that is also part of a foundation to protect the whales in the region.
The weather was spectacular, and I really enjoyed seeing the island of Sao Miguel from the boat view.
@maggiemae The maker of the gin named it Baleia (which means whale in Portuguese). He basically wanted to form a foundation for protecting the whales in the area (the Azores has many varieties), so the sale of the gin also gives money to the Whale foundation he created in the Azores. All the local bars that sell it too send a portion of the sales to the foundation. The label is also a beautiful whale logo.
@jgpittenger I believe we saw minimally about 6 types of dolphins on the trip. Spinner sounds about right. They were small and did all kinds of twisting flips!
@jamibann I imagine you could go there quite easily--it's a European destination heaven, and so affordable. You would looooove the hiking on every portion of the island.
Beautiful action shot of all the dolphins and birds!
I love the ocean and never tire of it and the sealife
