I was the recipient of the Robert P. Jones Award for the 19th Annual Expressions of Light Competition and Exhibition. This is my photo called "The Trial."
For the first time ever, someone asked me what my photo "meant." I was a bit stunned--so I said I was trying to capture the light across the seats of the chair and thought how it seemed to shed light on things (and if people were there, well, then maybe the truth would reveal itsself?). The lady thought it was a reference to Ireland and a specific trial going on there--I was not following, but then I told her that her story sounded much better than mine and from now on it would be just about that.
I wonder what my work really is about? Good question. No answer, except "expression of light...and shadow" :)
Oh how exciting Daryl, congrats! Especially the question... and you are right, do we know what our work is about... good thing to think about over the weekend...
Well Done! great capture award and story, back to the discussion "what does a photograph mean to you", and "what is a good photograph" - this one meets any queries, Toot Toot!!
Congratultions!!! It happens to me as well many times ...people trying to find a meaning of a picture but at the end the important is what the pictures makes each people feel ...
Congratulations, Daryl! It's a fab shot. I've never been asked what my work meant, but now that I've read your story, I've given it some thought. Why does everything have to have a meaning? Can't it just be beautiful or interesting? I think I'd tell the woman, "I leave that up to the viewer to decide".
Yahoo! I am trying to remember if I got your autograph when you were here! l learned a long time ago that art isn't always intended to MEAN something! At least not to the artist! often it is just as you said, more about composition and/or light. The observer is the one that needs it to have meaning. (loved the comment about the people in the chairs!) congratulations on an honor well deserved!
Congrats on the win. It is a great image with that is well-composed. I turned my laptop upside down as I enjoyed the symmetry of the lights/shadows and I seemed to worked well frame upside down. You should enter it again for next year like that :-)
big CONGRATULATIONS, daryl! that is awesome. and quite inspirational, mind you.
sometimes, we take a photo because we thought it has artistic merit or just because we like what we see and we try to capture it. when they always say 'art (or beauty) is subjective'. that is quite right, because often other people would have an interpretation of their own or it would remind them of something significant to them when they see a photograph or sculpture or any art work for that matter.
