So this time, I took out my friend's 100-400 mm lens to the XC meet and used a monopod to help keep things in focus. I took very many bad shots today because I set up my position late and spent about 45 minutes looking for a specific location that never materialized (a covered bridge the kids go on). Anyway, it was like being in the Blair Witch Project, walking around in circles. So two races were a bust, but the third, I hung out before the last 400meters to catch the JV boys going up the hill, and this one turned out great (at least, it's better than the previous one).
This is also a full light situation, though. But using a monopod is essential--that I have figured out.
There are stability settings on the lens I have not investigated yet, so that's for next weekend at my favorite venue to take XC shots.
