Canal at night

This is the barge canal in Rome, NY. The canal is an upgrade to the Erie Canal which played such an important part of New York State's history. The canal links Lake Erie and Lake Ontario with the Hudson River. From the Hudson River, boats can go out to the Atlantic Ocean. There are a series of locks to go through the canal which will open in May. There are still barges used on the canal today, but many use the canal to bring their yachts to and from Florida and other southern places. They will come back north for the summer months, and head back to warmer climates in the winter months. Unfortunately, last night when I took this is was about 30 degrees and no one was out!!

This photo is SOOC.
I love the star effect you captured in the lights! Gorgeous!

@melissapike I really can't credit for them. I have no idea how I got that look!!!
posted March 30th, 2012
Of course you can take credit, you took the shot didn't you! I love the vibrant colors and those flares in the lights too, Debbi! The reflections on the water are great and probably wouldn't be there if there had been boats on the water so this is a superb shot!

@grammyn I'm assuming the long exposure had something to do with the star effect, but that's really all I know. But I did take the picture. My fingers were numb for an hour trying to get warm after!!
posted March 30th, 2012
The f/20 aperture you chose gave you the star effect so of course you can take credit Debbi.
posted March 30th, 2012
Well you had it all to yourself. Was this just a long exposure of did you use HDR Processing?

Nice restful scene.

@debbim You can get a cable release and then you can keep your hands all toasty in your gloves.
posted March 30th, 2012
@debbim It's an effect of the small aperture. This explains better than I can... http://www.slrlounge.com/diffraction-aperture-and-starburst-effects
posted March 30th, 2012
@jwlynn64 It was a long exposure. I also bumped the ISO up to 800 which I normally shoot at 200.
posted March 30th, 2012
@jwlynn64 Thanks John. Ok, now you will laugh. I used a cable release!! Just never thought to keep my hands in my pockets. I did not bring gloves with me.

@jonesp Thank you Paul. I am so happy to know that.
posted March 30th, 2012
@melissapike Thank you Melissa. Of course, now that I think about it, I should have known that. I always get a sunburst effect when taking landscape sunset pictures. And since I use a wide angle lens for them most of the time and a small aperture, I knew that's why I got them. I just never applied it to night time photography. This was the first time I shot at night with my new camera.
