This view of Straightsmouth Island was actually taken after the boat cruise, from the rocky Headlands over Rockport harbor. I was looking south and using a 300 mm telephoto lens. You can see lobster buoys scattered over the surface of the water, as this is a famous lobstering area.
Just south of this point, around the bend, is Emerson Point, which according to our captain, is considered to be the closest point of the mainland U.S. to Europe. Looking east, there is nothing out there but blue, blue ocean all the way to Europe. When they first laid the trans-Atlantic cable in the late 19th century, it terminated near here.
Rockport was my beloved home, and this photo of the three rocky points reveals its rocky nature and also its position on the eastern edge of Cape Ann, facing the open ocean.
