Purple Windows on Beacon Street by deborahsimmerman

Purple Windows on Beacon Street

The famous purple windows of Beacon Hill are that way because of a manufacturing defect in Europe in the early 1800s. The panes were shipped as clear glass but turned lavender with exposure to the sun. Homeowners were initially upset about this, but the purple windows soon became a status symbol and are still prestigious today.

This building is on the flat of the hill opposite the Public Garden. According to my internet research, the lavender windows in the house on the right may not be "authentic" as the house was built just after the years when the faulty glass was shipped. Be that as it may, they look lovely, especially in the oriel on the second floor, which I think would be a delightful place to sit in.
What an interesting history to this happening - whether it be this particular home or not. I'd never heard this story before and would love to see one of these.
