White Dove of the Desert by desertaura

White Dove of the Desert

This is Mission San Xavier del Bac, located south of Tucson, Arizona. The historic Spanish Catholic mission was founded in 1692 by Padre Eusebio Kino. This building, widely considered to be the finest example of Spanish Colonial architecture in the United States, was built between 1783-1797. It is the oldest European structure in Arizona. The "White Dove of the Desert" is an affectionate nickname given to the mission, but I was unable to find information about who gave it that nickname or when it was given.
Wow!

Beautiful image of this iconic structure - and I love the processing! Hard to get this type of photograph without loads of people in the way! I went to visit this Mission with my daughter in July, when she first moved to Phoenix. I've just booked to go over and see her at the end of April. We're planning heading to the North of Arizona to visit Havasupai Falls, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, etc., for a spot of hiking and photography. Excited doesn't cover it! :-)

@elatedpixie @jamibann - Thanks, Phylm! Issi, I'm jealous of your upcoming trip! I've lived here for 36 years and have not been to any of those places you mentioned, but have always wanted to go. I have been to northern Arizona multiple times, just not to those specific places. I'm going to the Grand Canyon in April. Been there twice before: once in the mid-70s and again to backpack into it in 1981.
