Big Peak Peak by desertaura

Big Peak Peak

On the way back from Phoenix today (Friday, 27 February), we made a brief (very brief) stop at Picacho Peak State Park. Didn't even go inside the park, but will have to plan a trip back there in the near future because I think it is getting close to the time that the spring wildflowers will be blooming. In a good year, the slopes will be covered with golden poppies.

"Picacho" is Spanish for "big peak," thus the name of the peak (shown on far left in photo) is redundant: Big Peak Peak.

On 15 April 1862, the Battle of Picacho Pass was fought near here. It is said to be the westernmost battle of the American Civil War.

@hinaansari @jamibann @opticlens @abroadwood @pammerritt - Thanks, everyone! For those not familiar with the western deserts in the United States, you will be very surprised at how beautiful it can be in the spring when the wildflowers start to bloom!
