New chicks by dide

New chicks

We had 5 new chicks hatch out today - there were 6 eggs, so there may be one more yet. The mother is very protective, so I will try to get a better shot sometime soon.
Just adorable!! Mom does seem protective....

How precious. I really like the composition, with the inclusion of the hen and her bright red features, and the textured hay all around the new little family. Fav.

sweet little things, I'm surprised to see them all fluffy like that on the day they are born. Other newborn birds I've seen are ugly bald things

@kali66 This hen is part bantam, so they tend to go clucky more frequently than the brown shavers, who have had the cluckiness bred out of them in favour of more egg laying days per year.

@allred3 Yep - they are up and running soon after hatching, so have a good covering of down which quickly turns to adult plumage.

A super shot - and a nice colour range Mum chooky has produced. You do well to leave her in peace while the hatching goes on.

@snaphappi - And the sixth egg did hatch too! The eggs were a mixture from out hens, so we can keep variety in the stock line.

This shot works beautifully with the close crop on hen.
