Kiwi

Today I went on a school trip to Rotoroa Island in the Hauraki Gulf (Auckland area).
We had a very early start - kids at school by 5.15am… We were treated to a special surprise, as this 10 week old kiwi chick was being released today. The kids all got to see him up close, which was a 'first' for them all (and us adults too). A great day, but I imagine the kids will be reluctant to get out of bed for school tomorrow.
They are gorgeous little birds how lucky you are to have seen this one

@peterday I wish! No, it’s the lucky zoo worker who got to release the kiwi onto the island. The egg had been incubated at the zoo.

How nice. I have only ever seen a kiwi in a zoo or kiwi house, never in the wild.

That is a very great thrill to see one of those live Dianne. I know how very unusual to see one in full daylight. Max, Jo ,Ant & I once were priveledge to see one in that nature mountain near Cambridge, begins with an M. They were doing a children's TV show, it was exciting! A long day but worth it all!
