These inflorescences are on a nihau palm tree. It is a native of New Zealand and starts as a trunkless fern. It takes 40-50 years to grow a trunk and is the most southerly palm in the world. The inflorescences mature into berries which the native wood pigeon (kereru) love to eat.
Totally new plant to me too. Nature is full of so many amazing things and 365 brings so many of them to my attention. Thanks for sharing this great picture and the background info.
