Up close and personal. How do we measure up? It is so easy to get caught up in the trap of comparing ourselves to others. We look at what others have, what they have achieved, what others are doing and then soon we begin focusing on all the things we do not have, where we are in life, and things we've never done. Before we know it, we're caught. We begin feeling the dissatisfaction. We need to focus on what we do have, how far we have come in our life, the obstacles we have overcome, and begin focussing on where we want to go. If we set our mind to it, we can do great things. It's never too late to set goals, to change course. We each have the potential to achieve great things in our life. We must decide between sitting and feeling sorry for ourselves or moving forward. With the New Year just around the corner, now is a good time to begin thinking what we want to do with the time that lies ahead.
*An added note. I will post a photo of the winning trees tomorrow. they only announced it today, so I will post tomorrow.
Great comments. I have know before and have learned since the death of my daughter 18 years ago that it does not matter how you measure up but that you be yourself.
A great message. One of the best things about being an expat in an international community is that there are so many different variations of 'normal' its pretty much expected that you are not 'the same'. Plus the cavernous divide between Khmer with absolutely nothing nextdoor to Cambodians who are as monied as Oprah Winfrey is so in your face it is impossible to ignore.
Thanks for posting this...I have no idea what inspired you to do it but perhaps divine intervention does exist....those where the words I needed to hear because sadly I'm one of those people who focuses on what I never got done instead of all the wonderful things I have in my life and how much I've accomplished with the life God gave me. Thank you!
I really like your sentiments--yes, I do this a lot with my writing. It would be nice to be as famous as J.K. Rowling, Neil Gaiman, etc... I'll have to ponder on this a bit.
You couldn't have put it better! Everybody should read your caption and have it handy at all times! Life gets so much better when we appreciate what we have, instead of feeling bad for the things we don't! Great photo to illustrate your words, Rick!
Hey Rick, I think I'm not the only one who heard the tinkle of a tiny bell as the light went on. It is true what you say how quickly we fall into that trap.
Many thanks for those words and warning at this time of year they can be quite poignant.
