Canon 5d mkii, mkiii or 6d ??

March 22nd, 2014
Hi one and all, im am looking to upgrade my Canon 600d to something a little more capable. I have already invested money into Canon lenses, so i am only considering Canon ;-). Obviously each camera is in a different price bracket due to age/features etc. The thing i don't like about the 600d and the mkii is the 9 point auto focus, other than that i would by the mkii. The 6d is great but i've heard that SD cards are not the best and the wifi feature is a little slow. Of course the Mkiii is the jewel in the crown, but its a third more expensive than the 6d and twice the price of the mkii.

If anyone has any comments good/bad of each that would be appreciated
Thanks for your time
James

Interested in this @longexposure . Some time back I wanted to dabble in FF and purchased a Canon 5D 'classic' for a few hundred dollars. I must say for an older camera the image quality is impressive and it has urged me to move to FF. After a lot of research I am plumping for the 6D. Cheaper and lighter but with the same or in some cases better IQ than the 5Diii. Not the same build quality and missing some features but it has some unique to its self too! Good luck with whatever you choose!

It must be said too that the IQ of the old 5D i have at present is still more than good enough for my abilities........ but I've had a tough year and I like new toys. ;-)

@kporte Thanks Keith. I also looked at the classic 5d, but thought if im going to buy another camera i should upgrade. The 600d is still 18 megapixels, but it just fails in low light. Second hand the prices of cameras are mkii $1500, 6d $2000 and mkiii $3000. For the price of the 6d i could buy a mkii with a nice 50mm... decisions decisions ..lol

I feel your pain! I was in the same dilemma and chose to go with the 6D in the end. I have been very happy with the 6D. I would say the only thing I am missing, which really isn't a deal breaker for me, is the 6 fps vs. the 4.5 fps. Good luck and you really won't go wrong with any of the choices you are considering!

Aaron's already kindly linked to the thread were I made a longer recommendation, but my advice still stands -- out of the 5D2 and the 6D, I'd buy the 6D. For $500 you get a better camera, better sensor, faster framerate, more features, and a full warranty and no shutter actuations.

Also, I'm not sure if you're shopping for a kit lens bundle, but if you just want the 6D body without the kit lens, it comes up on sale fairly regularly at around $1500-$1600 in the US.

I'm not sure what lenses you have, but your profile says your favourite lens is your Sigma 10-20mm. Just in case you're not aware, that lens will not work correctly on any full-frame camera, as it's a crop-frame lens. That may be the case with some of your other lenses, too. (Canon crop-frame lenses, marked EF-S, will not even physically fit on a full-frame camera).

@exposure4u thanks for the reply Wendy

@abirkill Thanks for the reply Alexis. I was aware about the 10-20, when I bought the lens I was unaware that it was for cropped sensors- oh well. I have my eye on a 6d second hand for $2100 with a 24-105. I have a 24-70, so I can sell the lens and make a bit of money back :-). Thanks again

@longexposure Are you in the US? That sounds expensive for a second-hand 6D kit, it's currently $1999 new from B&H:

@abirkill no Alexis I'm in Australia and Western Australia at that. which make it double the price....lol
March 22nd, 2014
@longexposure D'oh! Oh well, you make up for it with awesome things to photograph!

Just get a nikon.....problem solved.....

@spanner haha yeah yeah I know.. I probably would have if I did more research to start with..

Alexis (as always) has sumarised the issues very well. If low light bothers you a lot, the 5D3 will deliver amazing captures at high ISO & with suprisingly little noise. I have never regretted investing in the 5D3, even though I agonised for nearly a year when upgrading from a 50D!

One of the features I find great in the 6d if the wifi, you can use your smart phone as a remote, the app has iview and you can control ISO, aperture, sis and focus from your phone. Great feature.
The low light performance is also on par with the mark III. I have shot at ISO 25 600 with very little noise :)
I love mine and don't regret it.
I am also in Western Australia! I bought mine body only last year.

Did you consider the 70D, an APS-C camera which would save your favorite Sigma 10-20? It's highly recommended and you get a superb video camera as well, at about one third the price of a 5Diii.

Here's DPReview, who typically lean towards the Nikon line in general.

Here's Ken Rockwell, who leans to the Canon line. The quick comparison of the Canon line towards the bottom looks interesting.

@ltodd thanks for your reply Lyn. I think I might settle for the 6d. I think I would have to sell a kidney to get the mk iii ;-)

@mummarazzii I did see your photo "me and my little man" and In your description you mentioned the wifi feature, which I thought was great.. Your photos look great by the way. What lens are you using?
March 22nd, 2014
@frankhymus thanks for the links and advice Frank. I'll give the links a look
March 22nd, 2014
@longexposure thank you :) I am a prime girl and my two favs to use are my sigma 35 1.4 for indoors and my canon 85 1.8 for outdoors...both gorgeous sharp lenses. I did notice a big difference going full frame, in a good way :)
March 22nd, 2014
@mummarazzii I'm kinda a little excited :-) oh have you checked out the canon 50mm f1.0?? Oh boy that would be my top lens. But at $4-5k for a prime is quite out there, but the bokeh is to die for..... http://journal.bryansoderlind.com/uncategorized/f1.html
March 26th, 2014
wow 50mm f1.0?
It depends on what you shoot but if you're going to full frame, you may or may not like this. Also, if you're doing the focus / recompose and shooting at f1.0, you'll need to change your shooting style

Personally, this lineup does it for me :)
canon 24-70 f2.8
canon 70-200 f2.8
sigma 85mm f1.4
March 26th, 2014
@toast well I have the 24-70 2.8, which I a absolutely beautiful lens and also have the nifty/plasticky/noisy/crapy 50 1.8. I have found using the 50 is a complete joy on the full frame, because it matches our eye so well. 70-200 will be a little while. I had to pull some favors with the big boss lady to get the 6d...
March 26th, 2014
@longexposure lol... interesting because i HATE the 50mm in the FF :)
March 26th, 2014
@longexposure I'm really glad you asked this question! I've really found this thread very helpful to read through.

@abirkill Thank you for sharing the B&H link! That is the best price I have seen.
