I'm obsessed with editing. I love nothing more than sitting at my computer and uploading a load of photos i've taken and then making something special out of something ordinary.
I know editing isn't everyone's cup of tea, but for those of you who are into it, I was wondering if maybe we could do a thread where we show our original image and then the image once we've edited it, with a little desciption of what we've done.
This week I was extremely fortunate to have a photo in the TT. Thank you to all who faved my image. I am very humbled.
I just thought i'd show you what the photo started out like before I got my hands on it in Lightroom.
Here's the original:
I knew when I took it that I loved it, because the horse was looking at me and I loved the windswept mane.
So in Lightroom, I cropped and made it straight. Converted it to Black and White, and then decreased the highlights, and increased contrast and clarity.
I would love to see your before and afters with a little explanation of what you did to get the final image...... maybe something you've taken this week?
obviously cropped, saturation, luminance, point curve adjustments and graduated filters. I also had to clone out the fisherman and photographer what were on the lighthouse deck in the original. this was not from this week, sorry : \ none of this weeks photos were very striking makeovers!
What a fun thread. I love to see how people edit their photos.
This one was severely underexposed. So in RAW I've upped the exposure a lot, and added in a gradient filter to lighten the bottom but darken the top a bit. Increased saturation and contrast and tweeked a few more thing. Then ran a couple of actions through it in photoshop (Greater than Gatsby base action and another couple at low opacities but I can't remember which ones!).
@hwhittle77 hew I love your style in b and w editing! I used to use a very old version of photo shop where I could control the three different elements of exposure separately.so far in Lr (only had it about a month) I can't get anywhere near my editing that I did in with csc. It always seems much harser. Do you know if there is a way in Lr to manage the different elements of exposure separately?
@hwhittle77 Love your edit and i think this would make a great thread. I love editing but have very limited skills:-) Finding out how other people achieve such great results would be amazing.
@hwhittle77 thank you so much for sharing your editing workflow. I really enjoy editing too, and am keen to learn from the masters here:-) I will post some of my edits tomorrow.
@hwhittle77 Great thread Hew. I also love editing but my knowledge is very hit-and-miss so it can also be very frustrating. I would like everyone on this thread to be in my house so I can look over their shoulders while they're working their magic - but in the absence of that, it's really helpful to hear from you, Lesley @kiwichick and Jackie @jackies365 about how you did it. Your b&w horse is beautiful. Many thanks :)
@newbank hi there, there's probably someone who can answer this better than me. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 'different elements of exposure'. in Lr, I use the slider adjuster to alter exposure, then when I want to change levels of highlights and shadows etc, I use the tone curve. There are loads of tutorials on YouTube. Here is one I haven't listened to but should help http://youtu.be/0-AYcQ6DKPw
@hwhittle77 Great post processing; the mono horse looks magnificent. How do I add my before and after photos here? The original was taken on July 31 and I already have an entry on that date.
@snippet thank you! I put my original photo in my 'extras album' and marked it as private viewing so it didn't appear on everyone's feeds. Would love to see your editing.
I, too, love the post processing of pictures. It's probably one of my favorite things about taking photographs. I sometimes take them with the notion that I know exactly how I would like to process them.
Before – just a bland fire escape picture taken with my iPhone. I took it because there was a mundane photo challenge going on that week for stairs and just thought these looked kinda cool and I knew I could process them to make them look better.
After – I processed this in Snapseed on my iPhone before they changed it completely (now I don’t like using it at all). In any event, this made it on the Popular Page and also won me that challenge!
@cindyloo Wow the end result paid off handsomely. The Korean Bridge never looked so good. Really looks dynamic full screen. Will make a fantastic print no doubt.
You need to copy and paste their codes. Beneath each picture will be three dots ...
Press this and a code will come up in a box, copy and paste these into the reply box. When you press post reply they will turn into pictures.
Good luck and look forward to seeing your pics

Awesome edit - it would have been easy to discard the first image - well done!
