I have only just got this new Nikon D3200 camera with a kit lens 18-55 mm. My wife and i had been out taking pictures and walking though the local Marina. While we were having a drink at this cafe. i was looking though what i had taken and just snapped this shot not thinking much of it till i got home. I really like the photo bar the light blowout in the back ground. I have tried to edit it with no luck removing the bright back light Would like some advice and tip's as to how to fix this problem. I have loaded a fully untouched picture apart from the water mark. any help on how to fix the blown out back drop.?
That is going to be very awkward to the point of impossible because the background (i.e. the window area) is totally blown out - R,G,B at 255,255,255 - no detail whatsoever.
@steampowered Thanx for looking at my pic. That was what i thought but been only fairly new to using Photoshop. I thought i would ask if it could be done in any way the main pic comes up fairly good with minimal changes but the blowout makes it look terrible still . Is there a way to crop that area only and under lay a better background ?
There are a number of ways to do what you want but they are going to rely on your Photoshop skills. I suggest that you have a look at selecting the subject and then using the Refine Edge command to isolate the lady, table and right and side of the picture and then overlaying it on a suitable background. Then you will have to balance the lighting so that the bit you have isolated looks similar to the bit you are using as the background (or vice versa) Try this Youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUUFIdAsj2o
You have to be carefull with the backgrounds like that.. If you had the RAW file you might have a chance but there is no details left in there and it has leaked across your subject..
This may sound extreme, but as I view the photo, it looks like a pretty good candidate to cut out the subject using Photoshop and drop in on a new background. The lines of the table, subject, wine bottle and pepper grinder have decent contrast with not a lot of 'fuzzy' edges that would otherwise require good selection skills. Here I think the quick selection tool would do a pretty good job and let you replace the background. Because as Brendan pointed out, the blowout of highlights has leaked into the subject so picking the right background would be interesting as the lighting would have to be right to justify those highlights.
Luke, not a lot you can really do as Brendan mentions since the RAW file is needed. However, I did take a crack at it with some Lightroom and Photoshop edits. In LR I used the brush tool to take down the sunlight and glare and added some "tint" to the windows. I also did some edits on your wife to adjust for the shadows. I then took the image into PS and did some further edits. The link to view is here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xps2xfxyuu1oolx/RescuePic1-1.jpg
Hi Luke,
Think lighting first. I made a try but it was pretty tough. I cloned the leaves and covered the bright sky and then fussed with the exposure but there really wasn't enough there to work with. Sorry.
Hi Luke.
I did a little test with your picture to see what I could do. I used Photoshop CS2 (Curves and Brightness / contrast). I decided not to take care of the rear window and focus on the character. I then imported the photo into Lightroom for small final adjustment. Here is the result! I hope you enjoy. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3233643/5023759_chnprvyz48_l_psd-2.jpg
But i think Joe's idea may be the best idea
I will try to cut it out and overlay it on a new background
@agima Your adjustments are really well done and are so much better then i could come up with from what i gave you to work with. Rose Profit has talked very highly about the awesome work you do and i thank you very much to take the time help try help me
@daneau@paulty@mikegifford Your adjustments are what i want from the foreground you guys have done a some really great work with the pic. I thank you so much for your time and efforts. I just don't know which one i like more they all have there own great aspects. but i still look at that bad lighting in the back ground. My wife hates getting her picture taken this is a nice shot of her and when i get a good one i like to put some efforts into them as she wont let me to just take portraits so i have to snap shots like this to try get what i can of her :(

I spent a few minutes do some mods that might give you something to work with.
