First time trying low key photography...thoughts on my attempt?

July 13th, 2014
Part of my wanting to do a 365 project again was to learn new techniques, tricks of the trade and become more "adventurous" with my photography. With that being said, I wanted to try my hand at low key photos. I don't have a fancy home studio so I tried to work with what I had : black foam core, my DH's watch, my Nikon and the flashlight off of my iPhone. What are your thoughts? How can I improve this shot?

I think the subject is too clear. I was told that low-key is about just being able to see the outline of the subject. This is an article I read when I tried this. http://www.lightstalking.com/low-key-photography I used flash lights but not directly on the subject. BUt you have a great starting point. And someone else may say it is low-key. Like so many things this is a little subjective.

I agree. It's too much light on it. You should only be able to make out a few details, not all of them.

I think you're on the right track. In the watchband, the shadows merge with the black background, leaving only the light areas to "define" the object. Now you just need the same thing with the face of the watch. Perhaps play with bringing the light source more to the side and down?

@joansmor @homeschoolmom @houser934 Thank you for your feedback. This is a bit of a tricky technique and I'm sure lots of practice is needed to perfect it.....

It's a great image, but perhaps not "lo key." Small objects are so very hard to get those selective highlights amid the dark hidden details, not enough room for the light to weave in and out the angles. Good shooting in your search for it...

@houser934 I had to admit I wondered about the size.
