Cliche

March 26th, 2010
I feel like all of my photos are very cliche. I have a little dinky camera that I got for 23 dollars at Target. I LOVE photography! I want to get a new camera, but I am a poor college student. :) I am writing this because I want to know whether photography is something I should pursue. I feel like all my photos are very cliche and unoriginal. I would like to know what you all think. I would like brutally honest opinions. Thank you!

I just looked through your photos and even though I am not an expert at photography (not even close) I would say you have a natural talent. I think your pictures are very original and creative!! I also like what you write for each one...good work!! :)

Your "dinky" camera is doing a wonderful job. I loved your photos; you have a very good eye!

I am not a professional but I think you have a good eye. Your photos are interesting and make me think there is something more going on than just what's there. I am not explaining it well but I think you are a good!

wow im impressed with ur 23 dollar camera ..... im not a pro either but i like what i see. Anyone can buy a camera but not all have the eye to make something out of it. Follow ur heart and it will lead u down the right track ..

I also think you've got talent and have noticed a good number of your shots on the popular page. I would absolutely keep photography on your list of to-dos for the future and don't worry about a more expensive camera at the moment. You seem to be doing very well with what you've got. :-)

We are our own worst critics. I spend a lot of time looking at my photos, scratching my head and thinking what I could have done differently. But... you need to have confidence in your eye. If you think you've taken an interesting shot, the odds are everyone else will think it's interesting too.

One of my favourite flickr streams is by a guy who just wanders around with a lomo and takes whatever catches his eye. It's an 80 quid camera. You don't need fancy equipment to capture those amazing scenes you see 'through a lens'.

My tuppence - I think your stream is really interesting and you have some great compositions. Stick with it - the more photos you take, the more you'll learn.

i love all of your pictures and i would say you are very talented. i think photography is something you should pursue if you want, but there's no need to rush it if you don't have the means to buy a nicer camera at the moment. all your pictures are so great already!! (and i mean it!). i also use a pretty 'dinky' point and shoot, although i sometimes wish i could get a nicer camera. but it works for me and has been a tried and true camera in the end. and i do not think your photos are cliche at all. keep doing what you're doing.... because the results are fantastic!

I agree with Emma, you're being tough on yourself. We all have different shooting styles/edting styles and content. Human, buildings, close ups, set ups etc. You have to consider that if your photography was the "average joe" snap of portraits of family or no focal points people would'nt be interested in following you. They follow you because they enjoy your work. Keep at it, I'm sure I recognise a few from previous popular pages too! So you can't be doing too bad.

Nope. You have talent. In some ways being hard on yourself is a good thing. It encourages you to try and think outside the box. And don't worry about the camera right now. Focus on your eye and composition. My goal with this project was to find out what I'm capable of doing, without using my [work] camera. I use only a cheap p&s. You're doing great, keep at it!

i actually really really like your photos, you have good eye for sure and you've had some amazing shots. your photos are not boring at all. i say photographer might be a good career for you. you have the talent girl. not everybody has an expensive camera, i don't, but that doesn't stop me to capture the moments in my life. i say you've got it in you!

Thank you guys so much. All your comments were really helpful!

Gotta agree with the rest of the gang. I like your sense of composition and I think you have a good eye. Not having a super camera makes you leverage the camera you currently have to get a good shot. I think it's a journey and an attitude and a way of seeing. You'll grow into better tools down the road.

A better camera wont make you a better photographer. Your work is good, some of them are a little run of the mill.

Next time you take a photo try to see if there is another perspective you can take of something different to focus on.

I try to take the same scene from several different angels, high, left, right, infront, behind, etc and am always surprised at what i get and teh way it changes the image. I also find i learn to see a better shot with out having to think hard about it.

I too have a dinky camera,

I've just had a quick look through and your pictures have a very personal style, so I'd say not cliched at all and you should definitely stick at it...also no need for fancy camera/equipment...as long as the passion shows through in the pictures (which it does in yours)
keep having fun, that's the main thing

your photos look great, but if you want to try out using different cameras you can get some really cheap second hand film slrs on ebay, its expensive to get the films developed all the time but really fun and really good for practicing using the manual settings. i bought one for £20 and another for £10 recently. good luck & keep going!

I think you have a good eye, you have some very nice photos :-) i just have 2 regular digital cameras that I use. If you love photography I think you should pursue it further, if that is what you want to do...just go for it! :-)

I think your work is very creative. You can spend lots more on a camera but an artistic eye is priceless. I look forward to the rest of your 365.

I have looked at your pictures and loved them you have a good eye for the extraordinary. keep up the good work
I don't think it has anythink to do with a more expansive camera. It is knowing what to photograph and your quotes
are absolutely fitting and beautiful.

At the risk of being redundant, I would like to add that your photos are *not* cliche; they are intriguing. And if you can do that with a $23 camera, you go talent, chica. Keep it up.

emily! are you kidding! you're brilliant. don't doubt yourself. i mean, i say that but i do it every day too... i suppose it's always easier to tell someone else. we are our own worst critics but just try to use that to your advantage to better yourself. i think you're fantastic. keep going!

If you feel they're cliche, that means you're not challenging yourself, and aren't satisfied with your own achievements. Your expectations are being met but not pushed. Instead of taking the photo as you first decide, set some rules for yourself ahead of time ("only blue things this week" or "only take photos from table level" or "I won't stand while taking any of these", or something off the wall like that) and force yourself to adhere to the challenge. That way you'll feel like you pressured yourself to try something new and not stagnate in your same old track.

WOW! For having a dinky little camera, you sure are an amazing photographer. Keep up the good work.
