Hi all,
last night I had the opportunity to take photos at a fire that had gotten started in a small business actually quite close to home. I was alerted to something happening because I started smelling smoke and thought it was in my own house, but upstairs I could see the fire out of the window.
The thing is, I shot a few photos, and I have two that I feel to really stand out from the rest. But both have some things composition and framing wise that I really like and I canĀ“t really decide which one is the strongest image, so I would really appreciate hearing your choice and reasoning behind that choice. It will help me taking those things into consideration in future composition and framing choices.
For more background info on the shots, please see the details on their respective 365 pages. Comments on the photos or the thread here are both very much appreciated!
Firemen in action - 1
Firemen in action - 2
Ps. Picture 2 I submitted to the local newspaper and was published directly with their story on the fire on the online news section. I was quicker than the regular news-people, though I must say, they had much more interesting shots as they were allowed much closer to the whole thing. Still, I was first :-)
Well done on getting published.
I think the picture 2 is the better of the two, however you could crop it to cut out some of the empty road at the bottom, roughly the section where the red-white tape is.
I like the second because I can see more of the flames/smoke and what I assume is a stream of water aimed at the fire. It gives me a better idea of the extent of the fire.
I like the second one for a "news" article. But I like the first one better from an artistic perspective. I like the crop on the first one, the action of the firemen, the way the red and white barrier creates a diagonal line and frames the pic...
I go for number 2. I agree with Joseph about cropping it like he said. Since fire and smoke both go up, it would make the picture stronger. Also like the firetruck being in the center.
i agree with @jdonnelly number 2 but crop out some of the road. there is more of the fire and smoke, which speaking from a smoke eater standpoint, is kind of one of the first things most firefighters look at in photos of fire, followed by looking t the trucks nd wht the crews re doing.
I'm gonna say number 2- you can see more of the fire and the stream of water trying to put it out, but I will say I agree with @jdonnelly about cropping out some of the bottom. Congrats on getting your shot into the paper!
I'll go with the second as well and agree with the crop consensus. There is more immediacy to the first photo's crop but I feel I'd like to move around outside the frame to get a better view.
Thanks everyone for all the comments and insights. I see that it's not just me not reaching a completely unanymous decision, but there seems to be a preference for photo 2 so far, with a strong suggestion to crop out a bit of the road. That's a very good point.
For all the other comments and remarks, thank you very much, I have read them all and taken them to heart!
Feel free to continue sharing your thoughts though, the thread definately doesn't have to end here :-)
I like the second better because of the smoke. I would crop out the some of the empty parking lot and also the person on the right with only an arm showing. It is distracting. These are great photographs.
The colour is better in the firs, t but the impact of the smoke is better in the second one, I agree with above , maybe crop out the half a guy on the right, he is distracting as he is not in or out of the shot, and leave in bystanders on the left. It must have been great to get your shot in the paper. congrats.
I think the picture 2 is the better of the two, however you could crop it to cut out some of the empty road at the bottom, roughly the section where the red-white tape is.
i like the second one, and i actually like that much of the road visable, i think it leads the viewers eye right up to the truck.
