Critque HDR & Colour Splash

May 4th, 2011
I have just processed two photos, One using HDR and the second photo I used the HDR version and then applied selective colouring. I welcome all feedback / critique.. What am I doing right & wrong? Many thanks in advance.

I too love the selective colour one!!! really cool shot!

I prefer the 2nd one. I think with all the colour in the 1st one the detail is less defined but they're both great shots xx

The first one doesn't really do anything for me; more than HDR, it reminds me of over saturation. I've only tried HDR once (over a year ago), with unsatisfactory results, so I'm afraid I can't offer any tips...

The second one, on the other hand, works really well and I like it. Just a point of personal preference: I'd have left the two boats that are up out of the water in B&W... but the overall look and idea is great!

@davidchrtrans David, I really appreciate what you are saying. This is my first attempt and I dont have a fondness of hdr in all honesty.. And of the two photos it is, as well, the one I like the least.
In regards to the second photo.. I was in a dilema whether to include all of the boats or to leave the docked ones out of the colouring.. I really appreciate your feedback. Many thanks

@michelleyoung The HDR in the first example has flattened the colours and spoilt what I am sure was a very fine image before the software was allowed to degrade it, and the colour splash in the second is a matter of personal taste but again I feel that the whole image could have been improved with a little bit of natural contrast.

Just my opinion of course, which I never offer unless asked, so congratulations to you for seeking views ... but please don't take my word for it; why not try it yourself and see if it makes any difference.

I like the way the buildings look on the color one, but overall I have to agree I like the 2nd one better and that maybe it would look good w/ the docked boats in b&w...great work! =)

Crit: For the HDR only shot, i would say that there is TOO much saturation in the yellow range which imo clashes a lot w/ the reds in the image. If you were to do a "selective color" adjustment in PS on the yellows and drop the yellow slider down a little i think that would help a lot. There is also a slight lack of value that you can probably correct w/ a curves adjustment.
I would like to commend you tho on not overdoing the HDR to the point where its WAY too excessive as is often done. So bravo on that!

For the second shot, this works MUCH better then your first. In fact I couldnt rly find much negative to say about it, so well done! The only thing i can pick out is that you MIGHT drop the saturation just a small bit on the reflections but thats more a personal opinion really.. You could also play around w/ the Brightness and Contrast of the BnW portion, i think that making it a bit darker will make those colors POP just a little more, but again this is also a matter of opinion.

Hope it helps!

@wordpixman Arthur I really apprecaite your feedback and comment. By learning to see what others see, I can learn to adjust appropiatley :o) Many thanks.

@tx_mendoza Lori, thank you so much, I kindly welcome the feedback.

@3nder 3nder, Thank you for going into specific detail with your critque, as I am pretty new to photoshop and processing the details you have mentioned will enable me to look for these within ps. Its never easy when you are self taught, though I am not afraid to play either, its always good to hear someone with experience give some clear examples. I really apprecaite your feedback. Many thanks

Wow! The second one is beautiful. I also think it would be nice if you did one where you only picked out one boat with colour. :)

@sobefree SoBeFree, thank you for your feedbacl. I may have to try that next time :o)

the second one looks cool-- like something you can print on a larger scale and hang on the wall. :) nice!

@sarmientorj Rob, thank you so much :o)

The second one isn't as subtle as I'd like it to be. I'm a little distracted by the bright colors, but that is just my preference.
