I'm a month "in" on this site. I like it a lot, but before I joined I thought I actually had some photography skills, but after seeing all of the incredible shots others post, I am feeling a little "down-and-out". I am doing the best I can to use it as motivation, but it's just blocking my ideas.....

I'd really love for any of you to take a little time and check out my photos and offer ANY and ALL suggestions, critiques, praises.... anything. I know the point of this project is to document a photo journal of one year of my life, but rather than concentrate on a daily photo journal of my life (and trying to capture memories), I have decided that I am going to use it as a "building my skills" journal and use it to see the advancement I make in my skills over a one year period. This should be interesting. Please.... suggestions.

Thank you all so much in advance!!!!!

Photography's about learning, it took me a while to notice it but it's really about learning what works and what doesn't as a photo. I can't remember which photographer said your first 1000 photos will always be your worst, but it's entirely true. Just keep taking them.

When it comes to themes, well.... they can be helpful when looking for ideas for photos, but if you're struggling to find something that fits the theme then drop it. I think it's always best to take the photos you feel you want to take, and then hopefully you'll find something that links all your favourites together.

I know exactly how you feel and had slipped into that "down and out" feeling but I used that as motivation. We all have our days where we just can't seem to think of anything that is worthy enough to take a picture of and you might take 50 and when you come home to look at them on the computer, they're all horrible. You just make do with what you have; or take a picture of something else.

Not all of the photos I've posted turned out the way I'd hoped but I know next time that I have to tweak something that I'm doing (angle or lighting) to make it better.

I agree: use this website as a tool to help you grow in your skills (I am!), and be confident! You're not going to be proud of any photo you take unless you stop worrying about how it will compare to others.

Hang in there, everybody is at different levels.

It took me many years to develop the skill of enjoying doing things that I can't do well, but I think it's an important one to learn in life. I figure focus on the journey, not the destination, and if you learn a few things along the way that help you improve, bonus!
