Inferior

May 5th, 2010
I feel so inferior to the pictures I see posted here every day (granted I am using a cell phone until my camera comes since my old one was stolen) but even with a camera I cannot even hope to get half the pictures I see here. Any tips? Tricks?

Don't worry. I feel exactly the same way. I don't have a 35mm that can do all sorts of neato tricks. Heck, even if I had one I wouldn't know how to adjust the focus on it.

Lol! I know what you mean, it took me forever to learn my camera, I cannot imagine trying to master one of those.

here's a trick... its all about the angles.
if you photograph something that is normally not recognized on that plane of view... it could prove to be an interesting photo.

just try and get a different perspective on even the most ordinary subjects and you'd be surprised what you come up with.

I don't have a DSLR. I use a simple point and shoot and I also use my cell phone. My theory is that it's all about making the equipment you have work to its fullest extent. Just pay close attention to focus, angles and composition of the photo. It's amazing what you can do and people think your're a pro! Just have fun with this and enjoy the project. This is not a competition to see who's the best. It's about posting things that you see...from your perspective in life. We just want to see what you see. ENJOY!!! :)

My old phone had a macro setting, and most point-and-shoots do too - I recommend using that for some cool, close-up, detailed shots. :D

Practice - read about photographic composition - practice - read about exposure - practice - experiment - practice - have fun - practice - try new things - did i mention practice.

Keep at it. None of us are experts. I myself have learnt huge amounts in the short time i started this 365 just by reading up on things and then trying them out. Its been a serious learning curve but a good one.

I have a point and shoot and feel pretty inferior too, but don't worry, you're sure to get better and seeing everyone's photos is great/helpful and will definitely inspire.

yep no one is an expert on here (well may be the odd pro photographer for a job), but most are on here to share their work and enjoys others i have a point and shoot...its all about creativity and knowing how to use the functions on the camera...and trying out new stuff.

I, also use a point and shoot (Sony Cyber-shot) for the photos I post here. I have a 35mm and love it, but I haven't gotten the last two rolls of film developed. The point and shoot fits in my pocket and I can delete any pics that don't please me.
As others stated, try different angles and shoot anything and everything - the more you shoot and self-edit the better you get at pleasing yourself with the photo - that's what it's about. The things you take for granted everyday can quickly disappear and you'll wish you had captured it with more than your memory.
The photos I enjoy most at 365 are not necessarily due to the photographic talent, but the subject matter. I get to look at the world and learn things I didn't know.

I didn't think this site was about what kind of equipment you shot with or how well you could manipulate your photos in Adobe! My understanding is that personal perspective and composition are what it's really all about. How do YOU see your surroundings? What memories will YOU want to look back on 365 days from now?

Of course I'll always try to become a better 'technical' shooter, but that's not what makes me want to pick up a camera!
