how about a new phone with a GOOD camera on it... and also make sure you can upload the photos on it to a computer, it kind of sucks when u can't... as I found out :( lol
A bit old in phone terms now, but the Nokia N8 takes some great shots (see my other photos album - there are a few in there and during last years 365, that vast majority of my shots were on my phone) If you find a really good camera phone, let me know!!! That the most important thing for me in a phone!
It depends on what you want to do with it. I have an iPhone 4S and got to upgrade to a DSLR early last year. They both go everywhere with me all the time! iPhone offers some flexibility and portability that a DSLR does not but I have far more control over my DSLR. =)
My friend has an N8, couldn't get on with it. @emmaroobers
I'm now really against the iphone! Although I do love the Hipstamatic app, everyone has one.
I've already got a Sony dslr, I just want a Canon because 1. I'm greedy. 2. I've found there are a bigger range of lenses and accessories for Canon and Nikon and hardly any for the Sony Alpha range. @autumnseden
You have to weigh your camera priorities. I'd vote for the camera over the phone, but then again I'm not a big phone person. I can see the advantages of the phone over the camera (size & portability) but could not imagine myself without my DSLR.
The phone was not necessarily for taking photos on! I've already got a dslr, just wanted a Canon too, but I can't afford a new phone and a new camera.. So I can't decide what I should get!
@miley89 I've got a Sony Alpha 300, which is yours? Know what you mean about the N8 though, it's like Marmite....you love it or you hate it. I hate Iphones though so never having one of them! Apple seem to think everyone are sheep and will just follow suit!!!
I have to echo @cchambers I recently got back from a trip to the Pacific Northwest, and I have photos that are identical from my iPhone and Nikon D300, minus some sharpness. My iPhone has really replaced me carrying a DSLR with me for day to day life like I use to do.
I took this on my IPhone 4 (not the 4s), and it only has a 5mp camera:
I used the hipstamtic ap. I have great colors and the photo even looks great blown up. You can take photos out of an IPhone and I also like being able to email them right from the phone. We were without power after Hurricane Irene for nearly 6 days and that's why I got the IPhone---you always have Internet. :-)
If you want to grow as a photographer get the camera and use the phone for that is made for... Playing fruit ninja and Angry birds.
While the latest camera/phones may take an comparable image to the lower end DSLR on auto mode they don't even come close when you move away from the Auto shooter.
@agima i have to disagree to a point..... if a person is just getting started, and wants to focus on just the basics, an iphone is great. spec and quality wise it is higher than even some of the older nikon pro rigs (and canon as well) it is a great way to get into photography if a person does not want to worry of all the technical aspects. Granted, a good camera is always better, if it is an either or it is a good starting point, without spending a lot of money on higher end equipment. and.... i have neither one of those apps on my phone. :)
@cchambers Sure if they have no idea and just want to point and shoot, then get the cheapest thing you can buy and if you happen to get a camera thrown in with your phone then go for it.
This is clearly not the case with this discussion/decision.
@agima i still stand my ground ith it depends on what a person wants to get out of it. if they want to drop a few grand into a good dslr great. if they want just the basics... i am not sure how you are saying i am out of line with this discussion.
@cchambers I didn't say you were out of line. My point was that original poster is not a beginner as she already has a couple of cameras. She mentioned that she would like to get a canon because of the flexibility and options this gives her, as well as being a bit greedy. :)
I think you are reading too much into what I am saying as we are agreeing that if a person is just starting out they should probably get a point and shoot/phone camera.
Some people want more options as their experience grows and I feel that is where Miley is at.
I started as a beginner with the Sony Alpha 290, easy peasey camera to get on with, you can even turn on the on-screen help guide if you are really stupid, but no I'd recommend that camera to any beginner.
I wan't sure whether to upgrade my camera or buy a new phone. The phone option wasn't meant for taking photos, just need a new phone!
My reasoning was that the camera I have there's nothing wrong with it. I can only afford a new phone or a new camera and not both...
This phone only has an 8.1mp camera on it, but I don't know how good the camera itself is @kericherry
It'll be the EOS 550D with the EF 50mm f/1.8 lens @jenp
Thanks @raggleroo
