I was just wondering if you take your cam with you wherever you go ? I'd really love to but sometimes I can't because of the size and weight of my dslr and I don't have a point and shoot camera :/
And sometimes I see wonderful things I could've take a picture of and I regret I don't have my camera, and with my phone it just doesn't come out right
I have the Canon 7D, and I bring it with me everywhere. The days I leave it home, I find I'm kicking myself for not having it. When I don't have my 7D, I at the very least have my iPhone.
Absolutely! That's why I chose a camera that is portable. Long gone are the days I used to lug the whole works with me. More spontaneous now and less of a security threat for would-be thieves.
Oh yes! It has become an extension of my right arm. I bought a more feminine looking camera bag (and hope to get a better one soon) just so I'd look more stylish. Is that vanity? Oh well! I love my camera - it has become a part of me!
@blerina i always have camera with me if not my DSLR, then my fuji HS20EXR bridge camera or my 12x zoom point and shoot because the very time you leave home with out 1 is the time that you will miss the perfect shot
Yep, I have 3 different camera bags where I can make my dslr feel small or large, depending on what I am shooting. It goes everywhere, and if I ever leave it at home, I always wish I hadn't. Do what works for you
Take it EVERYwhere! When I got my DSLR, I thought it would get left at home more and take the p&s, but, nope. My 'purse' is an trekking bag, padded, with all kinds of pockets for everything I may need. If I leave the house without it I feel naked. I could more easily leave barefoot than without my camera.
I have Nikon D3100 & some lens.I never step out with out my camera bag even its heavy.I may forget my money or anyother things but not my world.Coz ya you never know you might capture some really awesome photos.
I take mine ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE! In fact, I kind of freak out if for some reason I don't have it, or have some dumb/preventable issue which keeps me from being able to take photos (such as dead battery or full memory card w/o backups). I have been known to just leave if I am somewhere and for some reason cannot take pix...it makes me highly anxious and just plain PO'd! (I think there might be a 12-step group for that addiction!) I too have a smaller portable camera for everywhere/day use-which fits in my purse or pocket (just got a brand new Nikon CoolPix S9100 for my bd yesterday!) and my "big" camera (Canon SX PowerShot 20IS) for places I have more time & ability to prep & linger!
I try to. But realistically, I can't take it everywhere.
That's why I'm so glad I have an iPhone 4S now. That's something I really do take everywhere , so I always have a relatively decent camera with me, for when I have to get a snap!
i do...but sometimes it gets cumbersome, carrying around my purse and my camera bag....esp if i'm running into a store...i take it with me even though i don't plan on taking any pictures, due to the fact that my car has been broken into before (my laptop was stolen, but my camera was right next to it...so lucky they didn't take it too!)
sometimes i try to empty out my purse a bit to bring my camera with me, but, it's not very well protected in there...and i only have the one lens....
i had asked for an epiphanie bag for christmas in hopes that it would be easier to take with me everywhere...didn't get the bag, but my birthday is wed, so maybe then....
if i don't have my camera, i do have my phone....i should really keep my p&s on me too...for 5 years old and being dropped a quite a few times, it still takes really good pics....
I bought my micro-four-thirds camera specifically so i could take it everywhere! I used to have a Nikon D40 but even though it's a small DSLR, it was still a little too bulky for me to feel as if i could casually grab it and stick it in my purse before going out. I now feel as if i've lost a limb if i don't have my camera with me!
Definitely. I always have my Canon PowerShot in my purse, and I actually just got a new minimal case for my T1i. Theoretically it can fit in my purse as well (hey, purses can fit a lot!), but I often carry it separately.
The one thing I have an issue with is leaving the T1i in the car. Can't do it. So if I bring it with me, it literally comes with me everywhere.
I always do! I have my little portable Casio exilim in my purse whenever I go to work. Then my Canon when I'm off work. I have different purses that can accommodate my bigger camera. :)
Since lastcouple months, I started taking it everywhere even though most days. I don't use it. I had to switch to a bigger bag so I can carry it discreetly instead of in the camera bag.
I don't actually own a 'proper' camera :( but when I go on a trip or to a concert or something like that, I make sure I take my P&S, but I always always always have my iPhone with me, which luckily has an alright camera on it (8MP)
I travel around a lot with my job (on and off airplanes and in and out of the car!) and cart my 60D plus associated lenses with me everywhere I go! I always take my TZ20 with em too - some situations call for a bit more discretion than the 60D will allow. If I'm pushed for space i just take the P&S
I always have a camera, whether it be the T1i, the Powershot, or a Flip. Sometimes a combination or all three. The time you don't, you'll regret it. I often find I'm the only one with a camera at a celebration, so it's up to me to capture it!
I'm trying to take my camera everywhere since starting this, but it's only a point and shoot. Amazingly though it won't always fit in my bag (I deliberately carry a small bag to try and cut down on the amount of junk I carry around with me)! But if I don't have my normal camera with me, I do have a fairly decent camera on my phone as a backup.
I take my Canon powershot and Droid phone everywhere. I have a toddler and am 9 months pregnant so carrying my DSLR everywhere is not an option for me unfortunately. I do carry it when I can.
Yup, I take mine everywhere. I learnt early on that the times I didnt have any camera with me were always the times I saw a great shot. I usually have my dslr and my P&S...sometimes just the compact as @sparkle says...sometimes a dslr is not the thing to take to certain places...!
I have my phone and P&S on me at all times, I go through phases of taking my DSLR with me. Problem is, I'm too indecisive over which lens to bring, and it's hard enough bringing the DSLR, much less an assortment of lenses! lol It depends where I'm going really. To the post office..P&S, to the park...DSLR.
I take mine everywhere. When I don't, I feel as if I'm missing something (the camera obviously! lol). One day grocery shopping, I was checking out and looking for my debit card and it got burried in my purse, I pulled out my dslr and the check out lady goes "You got a a camera in there!?" haha. The look on her face was hilarious. Too bad I didn't capture it! I think I will always carry it. I'm afraid I will miss something if I don't. Especially with my son. I try to capture everything, annoys my husband sometimes. hahaha.
Not being able to carry a full loaded dslr camera easily is the main reason I opted for a point-and-shoot camera as my main camera. I can see why people are using their phones to take pictures, they don't have to carry another piece of equipment. Granted the pictures may not have that fine art quality but I have taken some great shots with my camera. This gives me lots of opportunities to take pictures every day which is my main purpose of carrying it with me daily.
@gailwf You could easily fit in the DSL with a smaller lens attached and have two other lenses with you as well - or another lens and an external flash, etc. The other day I went film shooting and, with a little finagling, fit in my Rollei, Mamiya, AND Pentax cameras - plus an extra lens for the Mamiya. :)
YES! I bring my bigger camera with me on most vacations...special occasions...and like you said because of how heavy it is....the other times I carry my small digital camera in my purse! It has come in handy so many times!
Yes! I don't have a P&S that I like using (as a matter of fact I'm thinking of selling my current one) and I don't like the iPhone camera much unless it's for something incredibly simple but I do need a new bag to carry mine safely in.
I have just recently started to carry my DSLR with me everywhere I go ..I have just missed so many photo oppertunities by leaving it at home and only having my p&s..I just attach my p&s to the outside of my camera bag so if its just someting simple i want to catch i have it handy and dont have to carry it in my puse either...But i herd someone, sometime say if you really want to be a professional photographer have your camera with you at all times..no regrets !!
Yes! My friends laugh because my newest purse is really a camera bag that just looks like a purse. I carry my camera and three lenses, extra SD cards, extra battery and a cleaning cloth. I don't know what I'd do if I missed "that one perfect shot" just because I didn't have my camera with me. Oh...and my tripod is always in the trunk of my car too...
I always have my iphone with me, which doubles as a fantastic point and shoot. I also currently have a small Kodak point and shoot in my purse. I use to carry a Nikon D80 with me constantly, but I get sick of the heavy purse (I have a Coach bag that fits a D300 w/ telephoto lens quite nicely). If I'm traveling, I always have a DSLR with me, and usually some sort of film camera.
I always have my phone on me especially since I've upgraded from a cheapie 1.3 megapixel to a really nice 8 megapixel smart phone. If I travel or go anywhere I think might have some cool stuff, I bring my DSLR.
@blerinab Hi, I adapted a handbag with long straps, I put foam inside to protect my DSLR and I find that okay. Also I only carry my purse, spare reading glasses, fold up hair brush, phone and a fold up shopping bag in case I go shopping. It has made me take less out with me and I realised that I didn't really need everything lol
I carry three cameras with me everywhere. My handbag is rather large. I carry my Polaroid SX70, my Panasonic GF2, and my Fujifilm XP. Not much room in there for wallet or sunglasses but, I manage. ~:)
I always have my iPhone and Nikon D5000 with me. Invest in a good purse/camera bag, pick your favorite go-to lens(es) and start carrying. =D I will never be without my camera! There are far too many shots i would have missed otherwise. There have been many bag discussions here. Just search Epiphanie or Porteen Gear for some recent threads.
I have one of those cool 3rd generation cameras...it's like bringing a few lenses, but it's all one piece. Sure you stil have to make all of the same adjustment as to a DSLR (it's only a P&S if that's what you want it to be, just like any DLSR can be), but I have done my whole project on it. I can do macro as well as big lanscapes shots with it. I also bring my IPhone everywhere as well. :-)
I do, too, always have my camera, and usually my Sony video recorder, too. What SUCKS tho is when I drive by and SEE something worth photographing but I can't because of traffic or I'm in a rush or there is no place to pull over. meh.
I do, because of the 365 Project! i agree with @chasingwishes about not being able to get the photo because of traffic, or nowhere to pull off, or something else.
@chasingwishes Yes! that happens to me a lot! And I discovered that if you randomly pull over on the side of the road, you end up with flat tires...my mechanic said that lots of stuff falls off of trucks and ends up in the grass and brush at the side of the road. For example, ripped out carpets are thrown in the back of a pickup truck, and some of the tacks fall out of the truck and fall to the side of the road. I've had 3 flat tires since the summer.
YES. I take it everywhere. It's the only way to avoid those frustrating moments of seeing a great photo op and thinking, "Ahhhh !! I wish I had my camera". It's also how I get my best shots usually...... the ones you are NOT looking for.
I have recently one evening where we went to the theatre with my parents and I didn't bother bringing a handbag or my trusted iPhone in lieu of other cameras...boy, did I regret that!!! Lesson learnt - at least my iPhone goes everywhere with me. I do have a P&S for some trips, but otherwise mainly carry my DSLR mostly everywhere now
One of my 5 cameras is with me at all times. On my motorcycle I have my Canon Power Shot tethered to the tank bag and take shots as I ride. If all else fails I have my iPhone 4s that does a pretty good job. When I travel I take them all:-)
Since I started my 365 project I now take my camera everywhere with me. I find myself taking it out all the time. I look at things a lot different now because I'm always looking for a great shot.
I used to not like carrying around my camera all around with me, but I've gotten used to it. I kinda feel naked without it now. I find if I don't have it with me, I regret it because I see a gorgeous moment and I hate not being able to capture it's beauty.
@blerinab
I do just about everywhere, which is why I always own a dslr and a decent quality P&S....if I drop one (Israel), gets drenched (also Israel) or it just stops working I make sure I get another good but small one. Size in this case trumps some other features since I don't need a "slr like" camera if we're just going out to the shops or a restaurant.
There's a few times when I'll go without a camera, but that's pretty rare.
I plan to get a new point and shoot for my purse because my DSLR is a bit bulky...right now I carry my purse, work bag and craft bag (for my camera, zoom lens, Flip Video and to-go knit/crochet bag)....i'm 1 bag away from looking like a bag lady.
Good timing--just this weekend I opted to not take my camera with me. I was going on a "quick walk" on the beach and figured the lighting was kind of low, camera too heavy, didn't want to worry about the sand, wanted to just enjoy my walk, blah, blah, blah... Well, I was greeted with a gorgeous sunset, a full moon casting a silvery trail over the ocean, a wonderful silhouette of the pier, the photo ops went on and on. Sigh. Never again!
i just got a Nikon COOLPIX S8200. Love it! I don't plan to ever be without it. Thanks for the posts re: glam camera bags. I didn't know they were available.
i dont take the DSLR every where i go as its too big, if im out and bout i tend to use the camera on my iphone 4. i am depating buying a cheap point and shoot butt he camera on the phone isnt too bad.
I take my iPhone 4 everywhere. My DSLR is too bulky to cart everywhere, I usually only take that out when I plan to go take pics. I have a Nikon Coolpix that I used to cart around but it's slowly dying.
I always have at least my point and shoot, but try to remember to bring my dlsr as well... although this morning I dropped my kids off at school, and the moon was soooo cool and so huge... and i FORGOT MY CAMERA!!! I raced back home after to grab it (this all took less than 10 minutes) and it had sunk too low on the horizon to get a shot... damn :-/
I used to when I was younger. Now, not so much. I usually only bring my camera with me if I'm actually going to use it. But I always have the cell phone (it has a camera) in case anything interesting pops up.
I do take it with me all the time- but mine is a point and shoot so it fits quite nicely into my purse. At some point I'd like to upgrade my cellphone and maybe then I'll use that camera. But this one has definitely come in handy!
Nope. With my ginormous DSLR it's not possible. Which sucks because, more often than not I find myself thinking "that would be a GREAT picture!" but, alas...my camera is at home. :/
I tend to take it MOST places... I take a nappy bag everywhere, I am know to make room for the DSLR in there :P That being said if I can't take my camera I have a pretty decent camera on my phone that I don't mind turning to.
Absolutely, I have a 7D & still take it everywhere, I take it to work in my Tamrac rucksack as it fits in the bottom half so I have everything else in the top then other times I take it in an ordinary Lowepro Toploader bag over my shoulder if I'm only using the small lens.
Of course if I'm going on a photo trip I have other bags that take the camera with the bigger lenses!
You have to have a back up when you can't lugg around your Nik D300 with battery grip and 80-200 lens !!! and speedlight........
I always carry a Nikon P7000 P&S ... an awesome shooter that fits in your pocket... *-)
oh god yeah, I usually have my Canon and Lumix in my shoulder bag even when popping to the corner shop. Had a phase of carrying the tripod when picking the kids up from school a few weeks back. And always, always have my iphone on me. Some of my favourite shots have been because I had my camera there when stuff happened.
Always have my camera with me. You just never know. I don't have a p&s any more so it's my D300 and a couple of lenses and external flash. Always.
I know it seems like carrying the DSLR seems like a big pain, but as you have noted if you don't have it, you miss opportunities. You really do get used to carrying it around after awhile.
I take my DSLR it when it is convenient for me. If I'm at a party or traveling I will take it, but a casual dinner with friends usually no. I will take a small point & shoot with me to these kinds of occasions instead. Because I photograph for a job sometimes it's nice to just enjoy the moments with your loved one's.
Also these day's with my iPhone I feel I can always get a shot in if I want as it's always with me, even if the quality is a lower grade.
My DSLR (a Canon 60D) goes with me everywhere. I've missed too many shots to be without it. I don't carry a lot of personal things with me so it works out great.
i never take my dslr with me unless I am going out specifically to take photos... but I do try to always have my compact canon ixux 115 hs with me as it's a LOT lighter :)
I'm starting to :) I always have my iphone4 with me so thats always on hand for the sneaky snap. My 550d is starting to come out with me more and more thanks to 365!
trying to get better bout it but it's not so simple since it's big and bulky and the only one i've got... but yeah, i totally get the missed opportunities. so many times i've cursed myself for leaving the camera at home after having witnessed a brilliant shot.
oh well... perhaps just staying in the moment and taking it in for myself was what was meant to be along? yeah... i'll go with that.
pretty much always have one with me, likewise DSLR is not always practical but the 'little camera' serves me well on those occasions when I can't take the big one with me
always, though i am still figuring out the best way to go places with my Canon T3i, it is difficult mainly, as a college student in NYC who does a lot of walking but also tends to carry quite a bit of stuff, including A camera and knitting. though if i have to carry it in my back pack i wrap it up in a scarf, though soon i plan on getting a case for it. definitely before the next semester starts.
When I did my first year in 2010, I used to take my 450D everywhere with me... now i'm a little lazier and more willing to use either my point and shoot or my iphone
Never leave home without my point & shoot Nikon CoolPixL18. It takes really great pictures. I have an older DSLR Nikon D50 but only bring it when I know I am definately taking pictures because it is bulky.
Yes. Everywhere. I have a Nikon Coolpix L110 which is the size of an SLR. But when I get my SLR, I WILL STILL BRING IT EVERYWHERE!! Hahahahahaaa! ...Awkward...
@buccigrossi That's why I have a waterproof camera. Huzza!
I used to take my point and shoot all the time. Harder with a DSLR, but I'm trying to make it a habit. My frustration has been seeing great shots in my car but there's no place to pull over and shoot that exact vantage point (without standing in the middle of a road/highway). Still learning to "see".
I bring my Canon 60D almost everywhere but not simply because of 365... I look at it more like this...I am obssessed almost everyday while just driving around, to school, to the store, to anywhere...or out where ever something triggers me, some move of the light & rather than miss it & regret missing the chance at a great shot I keep the camera with me & shoot, I would even without 365...365 just gives me somewhere to annoy the populace with my photos. BTW I have a Lowepro Passport Sling bag, has one nice soft roomy section that fits my DSLR & another for other things like my wallet & wipes for the kiddos...there are even little pockets inside for things like memory cards & open pockets outside for things like my cell phone.
Oh and at the very least IF for some reason I don't have it there is always the iPhone LOL
Ugh, I wish I had the spare set of hands I often needed to take my DSLR. Instead, there are sometimes where practicality has to kick in and I go without, using my iPhone if I have to. Not my favourite tool, but c'est la vie!
I've always got my iPhone on me, so technically yes!
I really need to start carrying my DSLR or compact with me at all times (or at least leaving one of them in the car). There have a been few occasions recently where I've thought to myself 'I wish I had my camera with me!'.
Absolutely! I just got a brand new DSLR camera that is attached to me like glue. You just never know when you are going to see something. and let me tell you, you can take some pretty high quality pics with some of the new DSLR cameras.
I learned the hard way that if I want to do project 365 or catch a great photo op I ALWAYS need to have my camera on me.I missed so many great photos beacause I wasnt expecting or prepared to capture them. I have a point and shoot though so it is not a big hassle. It might be an investment worth doing, there are many on the market that are affordable AND quality.
THIS is the main reason I don't even want a dslr camera! The technology of point and shoot cameras is so good and you can carry a reasonably small sized purse and have it with you always!
I carry it with me even if i am just going to the grocery store. Between my G1 and my iPhone, i am NEVER without a camera. But i also have a HUGE purse so it makes it easier.
@buccigrossi ,, I did, got a waterproof camera for Christmas and couldnt wait to find a pool to try it out.. and I take it when I go to the loo as well. lol just thought you could use that info..
I carry around my Nikon D500 just about everywhere, I have a Lowepro sling bag that is easy to carry and lets me swing it around quickly enough to get at the camera. My biggest problem is constantly having to swap between the 18-55 and the 55-200 lens.
i never leave the house without my camera, at first i used to take my little camera to the city, school or out with friends, but now i'm used to take the bigger one everywhere
I have my cell phone on my at all times, which takes some pretty decent pictures. I just upgraded to the Canon 7D and usually have the 24-70mm lens on it, which means I get nervous carrying it around with me all the time (and it's also really heavy!) I'm starting to carry it around with me more though. I may have to look for a larger purse that it will fit in comfortably too.
@blerinab I just started this project on the 1st and I am a little self-conscious about bringing my dslr everywhere. Today was the first day I said "to hell with it". I brought it to the craft store and the supermarket with my 2 year old. I am glad I did. I never thought about all the flowers in the craft store that could make a great photo. I am going to carry it everywhere from now on. I bought a strap that lets the camera hang at my hip. I really like it.
My phone takes a good picture if my DSLR isn't to hand but I have started taking my camera to work with me and locking it in the boot of my car so it is with me at all times. I'm obsessed with 'that would have been a good shot' moments and it is a relief to go anywhere in the dark so my brain can turn off! Try and keep a camera with you where ever you go, even if low quality you can always edit them afterwards! Fit it in with your lifestyle :)
I always have my EVO (my telephone) which is 8 mgpx but MOST of the time yes, my big camera is in the car. That doesn't mean I carry it into every place I go, but it's with me pretty much all the time. I will take a lot of pics with my phone, though the zoom is very limited on it and the shutter is slow.
This year (and due to this project) I've made a conscious effort to take my DSLR with me each day, although I don't like the idea of leaving it in the car (I'm a sales rep so I'm in and out of the car all day)...however, I know that one day something so photo worthy will present itself and I would be so cranky at myself for not having my camera with me....sometimes the iPhone camera just doesn't cut it! :)
My husband and I popped out to the shops once and I got a text message from my son asking where we were. I was in a chirpy mood, so I replied that we had run away to the Sahara for a holiday. Quick as a flash the reply came "No way. Your cameras are still here. You don't do anything without them" :)
I feel that same exact way...I make it a point to take my DSLR everywhere but sometimes I feel like its too large to carry around everywhere. Maybe I need a better camera bag...
There's a saying here that once you stop carrying a camera you're no longer a tourist, which has a ring of truth to it. I had stopped carrying mine, but despite my daughters protests against it I recently started to carry a rucksack with my camera, Kindle, cellphone & iPod in it... partly to get shots I was missing and partly because I find myself waiting for the very same daughters A LOT. :-)
@mgirard I am the same way with my lenses. I actually got a camera backpack recently, but switching between lenses is probably the thing that I struggle with the most. I don't seem to have enough hands :)
@sherzymay I completely agree with being scared about leaving the camera in the car. The only reason I do is because I work in the same parking lot as the police station. Hopefully nobody is crazy enough to break into a car or anything in front of the police :) Plus, with the weather I don't care for it being out in the hot/cold much.
P&S in handbag at ALL times.
Phone as a backup
That's why I'm so glad I have an iPhone 4S now. That's something I really do take everywhere , so I always have a relatively decent camera with me, for when I have to get a snap!

@dejongdd here's a site that was suggested a while ago..... enjoy shopping! http://blog.veralana.com/2010/01/05/need-a-cute-camera-bag/
Don't know what I'm going to do when I get a DSLR :)
I would recommend getting a bag you like or that is more comfortable if that is your hold up.
Most of my 365 is done with my P&S.
Of course if I'm going on a photo trip I have other bags that take the camera with the bigger lenses!
I always carry a Nikon P7000 P&S ... an awesome shooter that fits in your pocket... *-)

You miss great pix if it sits at home!
