Locations to shoot in London

February 1st, 2012
Hi guys,

I'm planning to leave London the end of March, so now I have exactly two more months in this city. Before I leave I want to make sure I have plenty of cool photos of the interesting parts of this amazing city. I did have shot the *** out of Big Ben, London Eye and Parliament, so please recommend me some hip, underground, not so well known locations, that you would never miss photographing, if you were leaving town.
I'm sooo looking forward to seeing your ideas! :)

I think @rich57 and @andycoleborn might be able to help, along with @eyebrows. I know there are a lot more on here from the area but I just wanted to drop some names...... :) I don't know if these guys live "in" London but I do know I have seen a fair amount of shots by them of the area so don't hold my feet to the fire if I'm wrong!

Don't live there but do visit lots for work. I'd suggest Brick Lane, Covent Garden, Borough Market, Soho/Chinatown for definite. Camden is pretty good. The Leake Street tunnel near Waterloo is worth looking at too. And of course the City of London, with St Pauls, Gherkin, Leadenhall Market, etc. There'll be loads of other places I haven't touched on. In the main I just wander the streets between King's Cross and the Southbank. Oh and don't forget the "bench" in Trafalgar Square!

@rich57 Hi Rich, thanks for your answer, I was thinking more of something outside zone 1 as I have been living in London for 6 years so I have been to the above mentioned locations many times, however I don't know what you mean under the "bench" in Trafalgar Square! It got me intrigued as I'm actually going there this evening! :)

@shadesofgrey Thank you for the recommendation, lets hope these folks will turn up in this discussion! :)))
February 1st, 2012
ah, yeah not really up on anything out of zone 1! unless you count Yorkshire! The bench is a spot that me and several other 365ers have been snapping for the last 18 months. Same bench, different people, weather, etc.

or check out the tag bench-life :

http://365project.org/tags/bench-life

It's the bench nearest the Olympic countdown clock...

@rich57 Oh that's cool! I will add my version of this tonight! :))) Let's see who will be sitting there today around 6pm. :)))
February 1st, 2012
Best place is to stand directly above it, but there's no real rules! I actually bumped into another 365er by chance there last week. As we'd both randomly gone to shoot the bench at the same time...

Think Rich has pretty much covered what I was about to say - But Brick Lane/Spitalfields on any given Sunday is a must. Also Greenwich is great and Canary Wharf (if you dare risk the wrath of the security there)... Hampton Court is nice if you can get there and Richmond Park...
February 1st, 2012
Jo
Kew gardens is also amazing, and by march it will be full of flowers. and you can do a 2 in 1 with Richmond park :)
February 1st, 2012
So much of this has already been said but if you want to go outside of zone 1 (although make sure you definitely do Borough Market and the Southbank walk from there along to the Festival Hall), I would go to Hampton Court Palace for sure - beautiful buildings and beautiful gardens. I would also go to Richmond Park - try and find the deer - just one of the most beautiful unspoilt parks in London. How about London Zoo - there is so much to photograph there, it's amazing...I hadn't been since I was a kid, and went last year and loved it...Another good place is the City, during the day and also at night - walk around and make sure you look up ! The different architechture is spectacular, you will see brand new modern blocks next to historical monuments, try wandering down small side alleys to see where they lead - so much hidden London is beautiful....

@rich57 LOVE bench-life! I'll have to do one of those sometime :)

@andycoleborn re: security guards at Canary Wharf - check out this link, something to print and wave in their faces as you set-up your tripod :)

@yogibari
St Dunstan in the East Church garden (it's in the City)
http://www.gardenvisit.com/garden/st_dunstan_in_the_east_church_garden

This is a chuch that got bombed out and turned intoa garden, so all the trees/bines grow through the windows which have no glass in the, I've photographed this a few times, and it kept me entertained for ages (nothing posted on 365 though)

New Covent Garden Flower Market (located at vauxhall) - loads of bright colours, lots of activity, and quirky looking people.

Brompton Cemetery - apparently one of the finest victorian cemeteries in the country with some wildlife in it too. haven't been there yet, but apparently has loads of weird and wonderful monuments in it.

"Buddhapadipa Temple" Thai/Buddhist temple in Wimbledon.
14 Calonne Road, Wimbledon, SW19 5HJ

Buddhist monastery and temple covering four acres and with ornamental lake, flower garden, orchard and Thai mural paintings depicting the lifetime of Buddha. Open to the public at weekends. Admission is free. Further info: 020 8946 1357....I haven't been there, but found some pics of google and looks interesting.

Chelsea Physic Garden
Second oldest botanic garden in England with one of the oldest rock gardens in Europe, herb garden with medicinal and culinary plants, glasshouses and rare plants. again haven't been there yet, but it sounds interesting & is on my list of places I am planning to take my camera :)

Southall - west london
Recommended by a friend as a great photo walk location - considered "little india"

Richmond Park! One of my favourite locations for shooting! So many pretty deer :) here's a shot from there:

Portobello Market on a Saturday, because that is when the Antiques market is on.

Ok that's all I can think of for now... I'll add any others if I manage to come up with any :)

@limpet365 nice, look forward to seeing it! also great info on London spots. It'll give me and Andy @andycoleborn a few options if and when we meet up when the days are longer!
February 1st, 2012
@limpet365 haha thanks - actually printed off their own website rules about photographers and waived that in their face once... Didn't work as was told some crap about hightened security means they can stop anyone... Basically they are a bunch of jumped up little....... Grrr Don't ge trme started LOL....
February 1st, 2012
@limpet365 @andycoleborn I wonder what they term as "public place" because much of canary wharf is actually privately owned - as evidenced by the gates that you go through to get in there.. I think that's the main difference. I dont know where it stands with having lots of people walking through there to the shops and the rest of it - does that then make it public? hmmm i'm not a lawyer so i'll butt out of that one lol

@toast
- Little Venice One of my fav places in London, I think i must have taken a photo of every single narrow boat there and imagined several times living in one of them! I recommend to everyone to have a stroll there and the cafe on the bridge is amazing!!!
- The Olympic stadiums at night - This one is defo on my list!
- Holland Park - I've been there, but not so impressed, it's too artificial. I prefer parks like Hampstead Heath, more natural.
- The boats / lake at regent's park - That one I love!
- View from a boat going down the Thames - Done! Tick :)
- Wander around the O2 - Will do!

Thank you for your list! x
February 1st, 2012
@sleepysmurf81 I was thinking about it and scheduled at least three of them in already, but I have a hard time getting somewhere on time on my day offs. :)))
February 1st, 2012
@rich57 Let's start a thread on this bench! I want to see everyone's photos of it! I'm taking one today! leaving in about 20 min. :)))
February 1st, 2012
@asrai These locations are new to me! I'll google them and try to visit! Thank you! Have been to Abbey Road and Lil Venice. :) Have you taken the obligatory Beatles Style Photo crossing the road?
February 1st, 2012
@sharonaddison Thank you Sharon! Been to Borough Market before and London Zoo as well, but I will visit Richmond Park on a nice day! :)
February 1st, 2012
Ok, you start with your pic when you get back! Oh and good luck, worried the lighting might not be great!
February 1st, 2012
Oh also, there are several pics taken of the view whilst sitting on the Bench, just to change it up a bit. That might be a good option for tonight fit's a bit dark!
February 1st, 2012
@rich57 I'm excited about the bench too - will check it out !
February 1st, 2012
@sharonaddison well, this is all jolly exciting full-stop! Will look forward to your bench shot too!
February 1st, 2012
@rich57 ha! I work the other side of town, not too far, but will make sure i find the bench soon ! I'm a newbie, so haven't seen the other bench photos - would i find it if i searched "bench" ?
February 1st, 2012
@rich57 - cheers, thanks - you and andy c have definitely taken a fair few !!!
February 1st, 2012
@yogibari here's hoping you have fun with it!
If you have time / iron constitution regarding alcohol, you could always try do the Monopoly pub crawl... surely THATS original! http://monopolypubcrawl.org.uk/route/original/
February 1st, 2012
@toast Haha, I don't think this is really for me although the idea is brilliant. Have you done it?
February 2nd, 2012
@rich57 Okay here is mine! It was 6pm, dark, minus 15 degrees, so no one was sitting on the bench. :(( I had my 50mm lens on, which wasn't wide enough, or I am not tall enough to include the whole bench in the frame. So here are my green boots dangling above " The Bench":
February 2nd, 2012
Love it! Good 50mm shot, bench (and boots) looking great!
February 2nd, 2012
@yogibari lol are you crazy?? I cant drink that much :)
Although i'm contemplating doing it with my fiancee but splitting it up... maybe once a month, we go and do a "street" on the monopoly board... thats 10 places, easy!
February 2nd, 2012
