I need help taking pictures.

I love taking macro pictures, and I have that sorted. But then when it comes to other photography, I get confused a lot. What usually happens is, I am used to natural lighting, but when inside and taking pictures I can never get a good picture. And I am not to fond of flash. So I was really wondering how I improve taking pictures indoor without flash.

have you read any books on the subject? do you have a prime lens that allows you to have your aperture wide open (ie 50mm f/1.8). are you familiar with ISO/shutter/aperture relationships?

@thepictures I don't have a lot of advice about shooting indoors, but just wanted to say that your profile picture is REALLY pretty. Can you tell us more about how you shot it?

@grecican haha!

I never had a lot of luck until I got a lens that allows me to open the aperture wider. Mine opens to 2.8 which helps a lot, even at night I can get a well lit photo with the proper ISO.

@grecican I pray a lot inside. I actually, shooting by a window during the day can give great light, lots of table lamps give warm light, and an off camera light can help also. I shoot lots of stuff inside and practice practice and experiment.

@thepictures @amers79 If you don't have a fast lens (2.8 or bigger, meaning a smaller number like 1.8 or 1.4), you can partially overcome the issue by using a tripod to steady the camera while you take the picture.

@brumbe what Paula said... it's all about practicing/experimenting

@thepictures I checked your EXIF info. Creating bokeh (the fuzzy, dreamy background) might be a challenge but you can experiment with the distance between the camera and the subject to create the defocused background that way. Echoing @grecican @brumbe - experiment! That's the beauty of digital - shoot away to your heart's content and throw away most of the shots. There's no failure at this stage - each shot is a learning experience.

@sdpace I do not have a prime lense, but was advised to get one by a photographer at a christening where i was taking pictures for fun. So that is my next buy. And i do know about ISO/shutter/aperture relationships, that is what is helping me do it now, but sometimes if I wanna take a picture quick, the iso is to low, or something and it goes wrong. @beautifulthing A friend of mine took that picture, I have been trying to get a macro picture of a plant with many miny water droplets hanging from it like that for weeks. And then adding in the reflection of the other plant it is great. and thank you to everyone else

@thepictures I just read recently that the key to really great macro and really detailed water is getting as much lighting as possible. I then saw this last night and realized that this may not be such a bad investment (some others use a ring flash. http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-MAL-1-Accessory-Digital-Cameras/dp/B004S7YM96

@emsabh would this light above work on a regular olympus dslr (sitting at work and not near my camera of course)

Inside is definitely a challenge and you can see that you are not alone. I know of someone who took an old plastic film canister and made a hole in it at the top and uses it to diffuse light when she does have to use flash--she just pops up the flash and puts the cover with the hole on it over the light. Some people have luck with mirrors to reflect where they want it to go to take pix

@brumbe my initial guess is no...I checked the Olympus site and everything refers to the "accessory port" rather than the hotshoe. Do the Olympus DSLRs have an accessory port?

I thought I have seen something similar that fits on a hot shoe - I will post if I can recall where I saw it. Probably ont with the gooseneck configuration, that seems cool!
