Geocaching for photo location ideas

February 21st, 2012
For the last few years I have been playing a game called Geocaching which involves people hiding things then posting the GPS coordinates online. Next other people use those coordinates to find what was hidden.

For me one of the most special things is that a lot of these geocaches are in amazing locations. I have used these spots as places to go to when I am looking for picture ideas.

For the last couple of months I have been trying to post the coordinates where I take the pictures in case others want to know exactly where they are. I know there are shots I see that I would love to go to so I could get my own take on the view.

I'm curious how many other 365ers are Geocachers or use their GPS to help them find great shooting locations.

If anyone is interested geocaching is free for the basic membership. There are a lot of amazing places it can take you.

See 365 teaches you all sorts of things as well as photography :-) I read a few comments recently from people who had taken their shot while out geocaching. Geocaching? I thought. What on earth is that? Googled it and now I know and it sounds like something that would be heaps of fun. Not that I really have time to gad about the countryside nor even a GPS, but I'll put in on the bucket list!

I use a GPS but never thought of doing this - sounds great

I geocache, but have only used it once as a way of finding a photo opportunity so far, being fairly new to the game. I think it might be worth posting a link to the actually cache you were looking for on photos where you went geocaching, not just the co-ordinates of the photo.

I love geocaching, but haven't done it much lately. I was telling a friend the other day that I thought geocaching and photography were a good pair. You are right that a lot of the geocache locations provide great photo ops.

I have been geocaching for almost 11 years now. It's taken me to those little out of the way spots that I wouldn't necessarily know about were it not for geocaching. I tag many of my photos with geocaching when I was doing that along with taking shots.

@mcrt Hi, Mike, I am Origami Cacher on geocaching .com and I love combining my hobbies. Sometimes the geocaching drives the photography and sometimes the photography drives the geocaching. I totally agree that geocaching takes me to places I didn't know existed right here in my own neighborhood/city/country, etc. and I now always take my camera along while out geocaching especially if I am creating a hide and want others to see what I saw.

Nice to see some other geocachers on here. For those who have not done it you might want to check in to it. There are some nice places to be found using it as a reference.

Hi, I'm fairly new to Geocaching, just hit 100 on Sunday at a local event, but I already love where it takes me - so often its somewhere close that I didn't know of & so often they are beautiful or unusual. I often tag mine with 'geocaching' as well.
I can't compete with Paul for time caching or quality of pictures, but these are a couple of mine I've taken this year while caching.

Yes, I have been geocaching since 2003 and still love it for the fun and interesting places it takes me. It is a great way to combine photography, nature, and hiking. My geocaching name is Sono/Rad. I live in Texas.

@rufus2895 I leave for Houston in about 30 minutes. Any recommendations down in that area? I'll spend tonight in Galveston. I see there are a few webcams and virtuals to hit.

I haven't cached in the Houston or Galveston area. But there are tons of caches to choose from while you're there!!

My name is GPSKitty and I am a geocacher. Well, I used to be. I don't cache nearly as much as I did in my early years. Still love it though. :-)

@pasadenarose I have slowed down a bit on caching the last few years too. I expect to get my find #3000 next weekend. I should get some great pictures where I am going for that find too.
