CANON EF 28mm F1.8 USM

July 19th, 2010
Anybody got this lens? I enjoy using the Canon 50mm f/1.8 on my EOS 450D, but with the crop factor it's ultimately an 80mm which is a bit too close. It also hunts a lot - the autofocus leaves a lot to be desired, but it is excellent value for its price.

I'm thinking the 28mm f/1.8 offers a more useful distance (for me) of about 45mm and the large aperture would be ideal. Also, it has USM so it should focus quieter and better. Any opinions guys and gals? Any similar recommendations (I hear the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is also good)?

I bought the Canon 28mm 1.8 about a month ago and I love it to death. Its very sharp closed down, and decently sharp at wide open. The AF is quiet and usually doesn't have to do a whole lot of hunting.

I too was considering Sigma alternatives, but I read reviews that were not so pleasant, and so I went the 28 and haven't looked back.

The only complaint I have is that it is indeed prone to lots of chromatic aberration in bright scenes, but this is easy to fix in most editing programs. I would also advise purchasing a lens hood. The quality of the lensflare is nice in my opinion, but not always desirable.

Hope that helps. (Note that I have used this lens on cropped sensor cameras only).
