One Thing Leads to Another

I'm pretty excited.... thanks to my shot I took, edited, and posted yesterday being shared by others on different social/media websites, I got a job offer! I can't discuss the details due to nothing has been signed yet but it would involve editing and designing posters for concerts and festivals. It would not be full time, but could be a nice supplemental income and help pay for my photography addiction! The photo that opened this door is below:

I never would have dreamed of this possibility 140 days ago......

***UPDATE***

I didn't expect to have so many replies when I logged in this morning, so I'm responding here... For starters, thank you to all of you for your comments, kindness, and support....

Now for the details I can share....its not a company, but a small group of artists that put in bids for contracts and also get hired by really small groups for small events. They design posters, flyers, tshirts, ebook covers, and album art (for unsigned independents I've never heard of).

I'm sitting on the fence whether or not to go for it.... the pay is practically peanuts as it turns out (anywhere from $25-100 per design that is used). They are basically a fledgling start up. However, even though I would not hold the rights to my own artwork once it is submitted, I would have every right to put it in a portfolio. Do I do it for the experience and portfolio building or do I pass?

You might want to consider it!

is this a local group? you should check them out thoroughly. have they asked you for money? i've heard of rackets like this where they will suck you in to what sounds like a great opportunity. they ask you to chip in money to their fledgling company and then they make off with your cash. you can't be to careful because there are a lot of underhanded people out there who lie and cheat.

@paulaag they aren't local, and they aren't even all in the same place. One of the guys was an old college friend of a friend of mine. It doesn't require any money on my part... just time (and giving up rights to any work I submit). I'm less excited about it now than I was last night because now it seems like it can be very time consuming without much compensation but also because even if a customer chooses to go with someone else's design and not mine, not only do I not get paid, but I also lose rights to the artwork, and that is what has me so hesitant at this point to accept the offer.... but it COULD be a great opportunity and I'd hate to end up passing on it if it is.

My son (who's 15) does design work via Internet sites where you bid for jobs. He earns a bit of money - nice for a teenager - but you can do a lot of work for no payback. It might be worth your while touting around a bit more as i think there are a few sites around and you could find one that suits you best. Mind you if these people don't stop you working for others you could do both! It's certainly been a great learning experience for my son and once you're in you get more contacts etc.

Hello Jeff! I may be green here ( such a newbie :) ) But not in the art world. DO NOT GIVE UP RIGHTS TO YOUR WORK. I cannot stress that enough. I was so complimented when you noticed me. I am here to learn more about digital processing, because there's so much I don't know, and looking at your work is so encouraging. I love it. But there will be other opportunities, trust me. :) That's hard work, just don't let anyone take advantage of you. :)

hhm - well, first off congrats! i know being recognized and appreciated for your art feels awesome (well, i don't really know it personally, per se....but lol...you get the point).
I would be pretty hesitant about giving up your rights as well.....good luck with your decision

@judithg @glyn @d4photo13 @sticksandstones @swguevin @rah2012 @hasselhotch @swilde

Thank you all for you comments and advice. On Monday, I'm going to contact them and tell them I'll do it on the condition that I retain all rights to my own work and if they're cool with that and me doing no more than 3 projects per month, I'm in.

Personally I would give it a try for a certain period. Then both parties now if it's interesting and you now if you really earn something in regard to the time spent. For half a year what's the risk?
