Question for those who shoot professionally...

May 22nd, 2012
I have a client who has already received her paid-for images, but is now asking if there is any way I can send her all the photos from her shoot. Now, I have absolutely no intention of editing any more pictures as I've already finished what was paid for, nor do I want unedited images floating around with my name attached to them. At the same time, I don't want to lose a repeat client so I want to be careful how I tell her no. Any suggestions?

Easy. I do it this way.

When I do a shoot I delete the ones I dont want to use, so that gets rid of that problem.

Any images that are left are left as they are close to as final as possible so any touch ups are minimal and if they want to purchase any others then I am happy to do it.

The key for me is that I start from a good base, I don't give them a selection of crap images that will require hundreds of hours of post.

The only time I will keep an image that needs a considerable amount of work is for a speciality photo but for a general photo, if it needs more work then I delete it straight up, or at least tell them that I have deleted it. :)

Does that help?

It does. And she hasn't even seen any of the other pictures anyway. She paid for 15 edited images and that is what she received. (Not to mention that I had them done the day after the shoot after telling her they wouldn't likely be ready until the following week.) She was given the option before the shoot to pay extra for additional images, but she chose not to do that. I just feel like she's asking me to give away my work for free and that ain't happening! Lesson learned. From now on, unless it's a close friend or family member, extraneous photos get deleted during the editing process. I shall now proceed to delete her images and then e-mail her accordingly. Thanks again!! :)

I delete every photo outside of the 15 edited shots she gets. I don't need them, will never call upon a photo that wouldn't have been one of the 15...so there is never a 'situation' where the client wants them because there are none.

If she paid for 15, she gets 15. That's what you both agreed. You could either tell her you deleted the rest or, if you want the extra money (but also the extra hassle) tell her you can (process and) give her more, but it will cost her more.

I'd charge her whatever extra you were going to charge in the beginning. Like you said you feel like you'd be giving them away for free, that makes sense. I'd come up with a price and offer it to her.

Good luck! :)

you could also give her small thumbnails of the ones that were ok but didnt make the final 15. That way she cant really use them but still can see them in case she decides she wants to pay for these?

Here's what I do....

In your contract, state that not all pictures taken will be shown and that the pictures chosen upon are at the photographers soul discretion that best represents his/her work and style. Pictures that were taken & are not shown may be blurry, eyes closed, clients not looking and not up to the photographers expectations.

IF she would like more files, set a price per file and offer to sell them to her per individual file. But I do understand that you do not want to spend time editing anything she may not buy.

OR - tell her you are happy to sell her a disk of the remaining files, that you chose to show her based on your discretion and set a price for those files.

Good Luck!
