Display Names...how do you add more than letters

I see some people who have added music notes, or hearts, smiley faces etc beside their display names. How do you do this?

Some one said a few days ago they googled "symbols", I guess you then copy and paste. There is a different way to add the heart on this site, it was also mentioned in a thread a while back, but I can't remember what it was.

@lynnb - Bulldog @gphelps5 just told me that to do musical notes you do alt then 14 on the number-keypad. ♫ it worked! Going to try some others.... fingers crossed I don't do some code and hack into nasa.
