Suggestions for my own challenge.

Hi everyone,

if you have a minute can you please help me to define my challenge for the weeks to come?
Here it's the deal... I am taking off this Monday to spend 2 or 3 weeks in Germany. I need to travel as light as possible. I can't make up my mind whether I should take my canon EOS with my 50 mm or my canon G12. Since I got my G12 I never really took the time to work with it. I keep seeing so many gorgeous shots here from this camera. So I think... Is it me that don't have a clue how to operate on the camera? On the other hand I have my 50 mm which always really challenge me to train my eye to be more artistic.

Which camera shoud I take in my next few weeks, the G12 to learn how to really use it as best as I can or the EOS with 50 mm attached only to train the artist in me?

Appreciate your opinion and helping me to define my challenge.

Thank you.

I dont know if I would want to take a camera that I didnt really know how to use. I would be more comfortable with the camera I am familiar with so i could really focus on getting some great, once in a lifetime shots. I personally wouldnt want to miss anything because I was trying to learn my camera and not focusing on what was happening at the time and regret it after my trip was over. Just my opinion :)

@superbeyotch , thank you Chris, for your opinion. You are right, and that is why I am so tempted to take the EOS with the 50 mm.

I would take the camera you are more comfortable with.

At this late stage I would take the one I am more comfortable with. But I would suggest that you get used to the G12 as it can give some quite superb images. And it is small enough to travel with you all the time. Look forward to seeing some of your images.

Take the G12 and get your head around the basics before you go by doing some trial shots with it and getting the idea. You will be glad you did. (Don't forget to pack your battery charger or spare batteries.) You can build on that as you go.

There's no point in having a camera you don't really use. Accept that your first few shots may be a bit hit and miss, but this is a lovely camera that is too good to be stuck in a drawer and rarely used. It will be lighter to carry and can produce some great shots.

I agree with Ariel, spend an hour shooting in your garden with it just to get used to it, then take it, its smaller and the pictures are great, and then you've got a zoom lens too. always good when travelling.

I'd say G12 even if you're not sure about all the settings - worse can scenario you can point and shoot on auto and you'll still get fabulous pics.
Why the G12 - because you can carry it 24-7, ..... in a bag, in a pocket, in a jacket and it has enough features. You will never miss out on an opportunity to shoot because you left it back in your room because it was too big to lug around.
I bought my G12, 2 days before going to overseas - read the basic manual and played with it on the plane. The flight flew by!!! Once you have the basics - the artist in you will push you to experiment with it more.
I still carry my G12 24-7. Good luck - have fun - shoot yourself silly! :)

@thebluegnu , thank you The Blue Gnu, I think I will do just that. I now how to work the basics of the camera but very often I fabulous pics here taken with the G12... and then I think... "did this camera shoot this pic?"...

I think now it's the time to develop an intimate relationship with this baby :)

@chewyteeth @carmel , thank you Ariel and Dave, I agree with you two. I think is better to travel light and that it's time to take the camera out of the bag and use more often.

Thank you Ariel for the tips... I will just pack the extra battery pack, mini tripod and charger right now.
