Inspirational Music/Music Videos

November 17th, 2010
What are some of your favourite musicians/music videos that inspire your work?
Some of my favourites can obviously be found on my youtube page http://www.youtube.com/user/SareTheFish?feature=mhum
Some videos off the top of my head would be Nine Inch Nails' video for "Closer" (inspired by the work of Joel Peter Witkin) and Mindless Self Indulgence's "Shut Me Up."
As for musicians, Tom Waits, Marilyn Manson and Bjork have all influenced my art.

How about you?

Visually i like aphex twin and NIN. I used to own a NIN tour/video VHS. Had all their videos uncensored and a ton that never aired.

I agree with @sickboi regarding the flobots video...very powerful message, very beautifully presented.

Ooh - great thread. Music is my other passion.

I agree with Craig. Chris cunnigham is brilliant. Checkout his latest with the master that is gill scott heron http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YABO2MMvsCo

Spike Jonze video for the Pharcyde: Drop is brilliant. quality track too. I remember they had to learn a lot of the rhymes phonetically backwards for the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co3qMdkucM0

Musically for me its mainly rooted in hip hop, but spreads out to electronic, soul, funk, left of centre dance music - but i'm open to any music that has been mad with passion (not your tepid manufactured pop bollocks. Why listen to that rubbish when there is so much great music in the world)

A small selection of what sums me up musically below

Four tets remix of anti pop consortium. Truly genius remix of the hip hop track - when the break drops at 1.30 its incredible http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3NrHRxZ7Ec

The roots - greatest hip hop band ever.
Old stuff from 94 ish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELTRdjuPQ84
New stuff from 2010 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K59pJ3I5u8M

Quincy Jones - Summer in the city. proper chill sunday vibe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd9wMHKMj6E

Oni Ayhan - One of the greatest electronic records ever made http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3grTvaQ8pAM

I could go on and on. Check out my blog for more stuff. I post lots of music there. http://hednod.wordpress.com/
