Canon 75-300 mm help

July 17th, 2014
I just got this 75-33 mm lens for my canon camera and got it used. Can anyone tell me what it is used best on. I don't have a clue how to use it or what to use it on. Close ups, far away etc. Thanks for your help.

Congratulation Peggy! I'm not an expert but I have one and it could be useful sometime. My 75-300mm is about 15 years old, the focus is pretty slow and the sharpness not there but I love using it to take subject far away. When you are at 300mm you better use a tripod because it's a bit heavy and difficult to be still. My best advise: try it in different situation and show us your work. Most important thing: have fun!

Is it the IS version? I really liked that lens when I was using it. If I was still using the Canon instead of having switched to Nikon I would still be using it a lot. The IS works pretty well handheld. The Non-IS version would need the tripod more.

That was the only lens I used for 2 years (before March 2014 - still use it frequently but not for long walking) almost all my shots are hand held. It's really great for nature shots - love to get birds, squirrels. If you look at my calendar view any month before March 2014 they're shot with the Canon T3i with the 75-300 lens.

Meant to stick this link with it. http://365project.org/milaniet/365/2014-03-11

Like @milaniet, I used my 70-300mm IS Canon lens for almost everything for the first 2 years I had my first (Rebel) Canon camera. As @mcrt mentioned, with IS it's pretty reliable as a handheld. When shooting distance with longer exposures, I used a tripod. I've given two as gifts bc I think they are that versatile and useful.

The only reason I don't use it as much anymore is that my 6D came with an L lens as "kit" and, now, I'm hooked on L glass. I have, however, replaced the lens range with upgraded glass. My son uses the my old lens now as he learns the craft/hobby.

@miata2u Congrats! Most of my bird shots (if not all) are taken with the same lens. Mine is the "kit" lens and I wish I had the 70-300, but it's fully usable handheld. It gets nice macros too if you can focus well enough. I have to see which version mine is. Here are my tips:
practice with auto focus first; try sport mode with it if you want to catch something moving--it'll help at first; bright days are best--this lens (if it's like mine) does not have a wide enough aperture to handle low light and it gets frustrating (you can see it with so many of my bird shots when the light is not good). Congrats! Hope you have lots of fun with it. Feel free to ask me any questions too. All of my photos today were taken with that exact lens!

I have a 55-250 - I use it for both. I love doing macro-type shots with it. Majoirty of the photos on my project are with that lens. If I'm shooting something far away, focus isn't always great all the way extended. But using it to zoom in close to smaller objects is my favorite. Have fun!!! :)

Here's an example of a shot I did on sport mode with the same lens:

Nature shots are wonderful for this lens - it's what I use 99% of the time. I have a Canon Rebel T3i and I LOVE it! All the pictures below were all taken at 300 mm ... so as you can see you can get some great detail with things that aren't so far away from you (like my cat); however, you have to be standing a little further away from it haha.

I have the same lens and love it. I use it mainly in full zoom. It is heavy on a walk but I out it in my pocket and swop it when I need it. recent pictures of a prom where I could stand back and capture natural shots, people and nature are where I use mine. . Enjoy.
