Oct 23, 2014 Partial Solar Eclipse

There will be a partial solar eclipse on Oct 23, 2014. If you have the proper lens protection filter you can photograph it. Go here for details on timing and for a simulation of what it will look like in your area.

Thanks Mike!

For those in the US, you can buy threaded solar filters, that will screw onto the front of your lens like any other filter, from the following supplier:

(Scroll down to the threaded camera filter section).

I would not personally recommend the use of a variable ND or strong fixed ND (10-stop) filter to photograph the sun, nor 'welding glass' or other home-made filters -- these will still let in too much light, and not block all wavelengths, which could damage the camera. However, if you do choose to use these other solutions, under no circumstances look through the viewfinder!

A proper solar filter will let through just 1% of the light that a 10-stop ND filter will let through, allowing safe photography of an eclipse.

@abirkill Thanks Alexis!

Here are a couple of posts of solar pics I've made in previous years for the eclipse and sun flares. These were taken with an IDAS UHB-RS Solar Filter (http://www.sciencecenter.net/hutech/idas/solar/index.htm).
